possible job offer but doing well in current job!

I applied for a almost identical role in another company a while back but never heard anything until today where I have been emailed and asked if I'd like to have an informal chat about roles that are coming up and would I be interested?

My current role is within part of a supermarket and tbh theres more supermarket stuff going on a lot of the time than actually working my proper role and I have to work evenings/weekends which being a single mom isn't always easy for childcare as I always feel like Im putting my mom out when she looks after my dd.
However it is a good place to work, I do get on well with everyone, praised by my boss for my work and it's a safe job really.

The new role (well the one I applied for) is a lot more hours but mon-fri latest time to finish would be 6 so childcare/after school clubs would cover that and also it won't be too long before I could leave dd alone for an hour or 2 after school til I get home, home school and both works are all walking distance.

I've emailed back and said I am interested in an informal chat but so scared that this job is best for me I have to leave the other place, they have done a lot for me and I am apprieciated, it's just the hours which unfortunatly I cannot change although have tried to.

Has anyone else been in this situation before and got any advice?

Also have no idea whether I'll even be better off or not especially with univeral credit coming in, currently if I do more hours, housing benefit basically cut their benefit so whether I do 17 or 27 hours I still get pretty much the same money so overtime is pretty pointless!

    It's a tough one

As a single parent hours that fit affordable childcare are very important when children are very young-less so as they get older but with older kids having weekends more available when they are can be more important in keeping with with what they are doing and spending quality family time together.

On the other hand if your face fits in your current company - that counts for a lot-as do decent managers.
What are the prospects for advancement like with the new company compared with who you work for now ?

For me -if the new company had a decent reputation for treating staff at least as well as the current company I'd be seriously considering it -as overall it may be a better move for my family . I would suggest you find out if "occassional weekend cover" happens at the new firm though if you are thinking the new role is purely Mon-Fri.

As for been "scared" to tell your current employer. They know your situation and cannot offer your ideal working pattern so to say "I'm regretfully handing in my notice as XYZ company have offered me a position with Monday to Friday working " may not be the shock you think it is...People move on for all kinds of reasons , employers know that and the majority of them are decent about it - and if they aren't-Well they aren't a good employer anyway.

Go for a chat....keep an open mind and a positive attitude and see what happens ! Good luck.

Wait and see whether you're offered the other job - if they don't, you'll have worried for nothing.

It's an informal chat, Kind of hoping they have something thats inbetween my hours now (17)and the hours they were offering before (40) Anyway I am going to see them on friday so fingers crossed it all works out ok
It should be a monday to friday position as they are not open at weekends although saturday opening is I presume a possibility in the future so will have to think about that one.
Thank you for your replies, I must get on with writing my CV now as they may ask for one and it's kind of out of date now lol!

Im still going to go though, it may be part time hours that is being offered that are better than my current ones and see what its like :)

The hours are better and you would be less reliant on benefits, hopefully you will learn new skills too. And next year the personal allowance increases to £10K.

Yeah I'd rather be off benefits totally, it's just childcare I have an issue with really, paying for and finding one that fits around my hours, no good finishing at 6 when the latest childcare round here is the same!

I've been promised to go on another course for several months now it's still not happening although I am capable of doing so, I cannot offically do part of my work without this qualification but do tend to do a fair bit of it anyway, all good practice but need to play it down a little I guess.

Still I've managed to sneakily copy some of my qualification certificates from work today, thank goodness it was the bosses day off! I will see what happens later, I've booked a taxi as although normally I'd walk its very windy out and I'd arrive in a right state lol!

I don't understand why you say this.

So If the benefit was £50 less, then you'd be £95 a week better off. ???? but you'd still be getting the same amount of money.

I grew up in a time when there was no benefit system.

Goodluck, whatever you decide to do.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Well I went and the interview went great, people were lovely and I will be better off eventually and better paid after a few months.
BUT I still need to sort out childcare but it really doesn't look good as I finish at 6pm 5 days a week and childcare just doesnt seem available at all after 6pm so might have to turn it down :(
It's so frustrating knowing that its a brilliant oppertunity but I just can't take it unless i can find decent childcare, my dd is just too young to be by herself for that time and god knows what I'll do in the hols!

Do you have family/friends/neighbours who could pick your little one up from childcare and wait a while for you?
Could you change your hours at work to say start and finish a bit early or do they need someone there at a specific time for customers?
Perhaps you could take a slightly shorter lunch break or something?
I hope you can think of something.
    Best of Luck
