No, not got access to their PC... Not even sure he has a PC anymore otherwise he'd of done it himself probably.

So lets see if I have this right... There is no way using itunes to get the music off the ipod on to my pc, but there may be some 3rd party software that can do it? How come the backup option is greyed out too?

So do I basically say to him, I can't do it?

You need to use third party software because as others have mentioned ITunes will not allow you to copy the music back to another machine, you also have to be careful not to associate the Ipod with your machine either as it will then want to wipe the Ipod.

As it's an older model it should be reasonably easy, I believe Winamp has a fairly simple option for transferring the music back from the Ipod.

I think (it was ages ago) that I used www.yamipod.com to get stuff OFF an iPod onto computer. Better to avoid this situation though - the computer is meant to be the master copy - the 'Library'.

Yeah tried that already as a colleague suggested it, says firmware unsupported though.

Cheers for all the help, will just hand it back... And format my PC ;)

And have another shower to get rid of that "soiled by Apple" feeling.

If you have access to a pc (and even linux), just show the hidden folders and then copy the now viewable files from the ipod device.....this can be done with the ipad too......on windows 7 it comes up as a device whereby you can see its hidden files.....COPY & PASTE from there.

Here is a youtube video showing something similar to what I just said:
