Having removed a lot of stuff I was hijacked with last night, the Search Assistant etc. have gone, but can't get printer to work. I've got a CD and have tried re-installing. Any ideas?

This happened to me too Fran. Instead of re-installing the whole lot, I tried just re-installing the driver. It's been fine since..................(She says, knowing that now she's said it, it'll go wrong again ::))
Good luck ;DBulletproof0 -
Only one thought
My printer came with instructions telling you it's important to keep the printer unplugged from the pc during installation till the software asks for it.0 -
Anyone got any more suggestions for getting the printer to work, I've been trying every day since this post and done everything in all possible orders. I've deleted everything and tried to re-install and tried just the driver and tried putting different ports...every time I follow the "recommended" way of getting instructions eg. "have you plugged in the cable?" etc., when it gets to the point where it looks for the printer it can never find it. If I follow the "printer already set up" option it "sets it up" and I have different port options, but when it says "print sample page" it won't print and suggests that I uninstall and do it all again. I've done this several times and am stumped. ???Torgwen..........

Hi
Couple of questions if I may.
1. How are you attaching the printer (USB or Parallel)
2. What printer is it and are you installing it by running a setup program from the CD / disk which installs everything and tries to pick it up half way through or are you using the 'Add Printer' wizard.
Cheers

Without doing aything else, when you plug the device into USB Windows should pop up a 'Found New hardware' balloon (in XP) near the clock (I just deleted my printer through control panel and plugged it in again and a balloon popped up). It then should go onto the 'Found New Hardware' Wizard if it needs feeding drivers and you should be able to point it at your CD for the drivers it needs.
If this doesn't happen Windows is not realising that the hardware is being connected - or it thinks it is already installed.
What make and model printer is it? HP used to bundle tons of extra software that it didn't need for basic printing to work and sometimes got in the way. There may be a 'HP toolbox' or something similar in Control Panel you could remove.
Also, what Ports have you tried and what ports are available to choose from.0 -

I did a search and found a printer file which I deleted, unplugged and plugged in and the balloon appeared! I had been relying on the fact that I uninstalled and removed the programme but getting rid of that file did it. Thanks!Torgwen.....................

Bit late now but I have just remembered what you can also do when removing a printer to make sure it's gone completely.
Go into Start ->Printers and Faxes.
Click on the File Menu -> Server Properties
Click on the 'Drivers' tab and delete the printer driver from the list.
No use to you now but someone may find it useful.0
