Oh dear, hadn't realised about the downy detergent.

Didn't use conditioner, spin was 800, drying was on low heat, but with hindsight I could perhaps have shaken it more. Really quite upset as it was a present.

Might try a rinse and another go at drying. Have tried ringing their customer service helpline but gave up after 8 minutes on hold.

I've got a a couple of padded jackets from M & S like this, no amount of tumble drying/tennis balls will restore the fluffiness, but you should be able to get rid of the clumps by hand if you persevere.

Firstly, I would wash it again, or at least put it through a rinse/spin so that it's damp. Then I would hang it somewhere warm and after a few hours give it a really, really good shake, from the top, then the bottom, then sideways. You'll need to repeat this every few hours, it may take a 2 or 3 days of shaking before the down becomes fluffy again but it should work in the end.

I have a John Lewis feather and down coat which the washing label says do not tumble (which is ok as I don't have a tumble drier). Whenever I wash it I spend about an hour redistributing the filling!

I'm going to try the down wash

    Thanks all.

I decided to try giving it the shaking of its life, which fluffed it up a bit, and I also teased out quite a lot of the clumps by hand, so that it is now usable without too many cold / bare spots.

Next time I'll use the down wash as recommended by jenny-wren, and shake it properly as suggested by all.

    I am a very relieved person :)
