Just reading through the lease of the flat I'm in the process of buying and the first line of my terms reads

Go to your spices / sauces / etc cupboard.
FInd a pepper mill.
Unscrew the top. There are little black round things in there. Take one out.
You now have a peppercorn!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I didn't realise people actually paid peppercorns! The point is to have some legal "consideration", even if it isn't actually worth anything.Note: Unless otherwise stated, my property related posts refer to England & Wales. Please make sure you state if you are discussing Scotland or elsewhere as laws differ.0

A peppercorn is basically a way of saying you are going to pay nothing. However I would suggest on purchasing something as important as a property that you get your solicitor to clarify, and not an internet forum who do not know the complete picture.0
