Help using gimp

Options
Hi I'm hoping that someone can help me , I want to paint over an image of a model figure that I have using gimp 2.8 -I want to paint over the top of the colour without changing the texture underneath (so I believe that means using overlay in the paintbrush selection) at the moment I am struggling to do this-does the colour have to be white to do this or can it be any colour-I can fill in areas in with normal paint by using the lassoo feature but I want to use the overlay paint feature to get the look that I want-can anyone help please.
Do I have to use airbrush ?

I'm no expert in Gimp (or anything artistic whatsoever to be honest), but here's what I would do:
    #1 Create a new layer
    #2 Lasso the area
    #3 Select the new layer
#4 Change the layer merge mode to overlay

You can then do all the colouring on the overlay with the normal brush, fill or whatever.

Then when you're done you merge the layer back to the main image.

I like working with layers - as I said I'm highly incompetent when it comes to arty stuff, so the layers let you change the image without committing it until later on.

You can also play around with the different merge modes and see their effects much more easily too.

Can you send me the image?
I will try to do what you require and report back how I did it.

You could also try looking on Youtube - there a quite a few tutorials showing you how to do this.
