Since you managed to get the police involved originally, could you go back to them again and tell them you think you've been defrauded? See if they will investigate it further?
Can you get a crime reference number or something to provide PayPal with?

Do you have the sellers full details?

I would be inclined to do that, keep all documentation and when PP send a letter inform them you have sent the documents and will happily see them in court

I'm worried on what grounds op can defend a court claim though. PayPal are clever !!!!!!s I'm sure their terms will cover them in one way or another
