A&L refusing to take calls on geographical numbers

I used the geographical number (theoretically for overseas calls) to call A&L, got through as usual, but they refused point blank to take or transfer the call, despite it coming into the same Leeds call centre as the 0845 number. Extremely annoying - any crusading consumer journalists in the house who are able to cry foul on my behalf? This is particularly aggravating because they also refuse to provide help via secure messaging (despite having the facility to do so).

At least it's not an 0870 - I note that many organisations are now giving 0044 870.. as their overseas number.

Have you tried 'withholding' your number when you call them? If they see you are not calling drom overseas, maybe that is why they won't help you!

As for as I know the number for ringing A&L is 0870 3333444 and not 0845,
there is a number I have used, 01132541566, which I have just tried and got put in a queue, however when they changed to their 0870 number I contacted them and told them the consequences of the premium rate number, they where not bothered so I changed my account , just leaving a nominal sum to keep it open if I require it in the future

They do have an 0845 number for current account enquiries (08459262626) as well as the overseas number listed.

They're not in any danger of losing my business, as their rates are extremely good and they've very kindly given me a large interest free overdraft. But it's annoying to see companies refusing to allow use of legitimate geographical numbers.

Yes. Customer services. Current or savings accounts. Press 2 to connect to the same call centre 0845 or 0870 numbers get you through. It is NOT MBNA credit card servicing, though they may pay your call charges. This number is on saynoto0870 list, but without any options – so you may add them if you choose. I’m lazy, you see.

  • I would just like to confirm that the 0800 number Denys posted with opiton 2 does in fact go through to the same call centre. I have just used it and entered in my telephone banking details as i normally would. Touch!

Option 2 on the above 0800 number always works for me.
