I have started my own business as sole trader, but just realised that I haven't given myself a job title.
What is the difference between company director or Chief Exec. From what I have looked up a Co. Director has to pay class 1 NI and all looks rather technical. I seem to get the impression that if I call myself this I am suppose to register with some government body.
Any advice???

Call yourself what you want when you are a sole trader.
You can use the title "Director" if you want. It isn't limited to directors of limited companies. You don't have to register with anyone just to use the title. It can look a bit naff /pretentious though if you don't have any staff.
Your title itself doesn't affect the NI you will be due to pay.0 -
I think so to - I think I would rather not have one at all.

I am just setting up as a sole trader and asked exactly the same question to my friends and family etc. some of whom have their own business's. I was advised to call myself "Proprietor". I don't think I'll bother with a title inless I'm sending a demanding letter!
Hope this helps :j0 -

Definition from googling (so it must be true)
Company
A business entity, ownership of which is divided into units called shares, which are owned by persons called shareholders who have limited liability. The business is managed by persons called directors.
Company Director
A member of a companys board of directors. Directors can be executive, ie. part or full time, or non-executive, ie. chosen for their knowledge or experience.
I'd say you'd be way off the mark describing yourself as a company director. Stick with proprietor.0 -
