Stupid VISTA . unable to reinstall W Defender

When i start the PC at the bottom comes up with this little red crossed icon alerting me that Windows Defender is not ON [real time].
I go to security center [click on turn on now] and it says no updates avalable for W defender.
Downloaded W defender trying to reinstall it [repair it,which is what I would have done on XP], and it says that Vista comes intalled with it so I cannot reinstall it!
I also disabled the firewall thinking that it may be blocking it, still nothing.....

Any ideas? Has anyone had this problem?

Windows Defender is part of Vista, not a seperate program like in XP so you can't reinstall it.

Just load it (click the start button and type 'defender') and in the settings turn on the real time protection.

Should sort it!

Yes, that is what i have been doing but nothing happens,
that's why I was going to reinstall it as I could not think of anything else
