Abderdeen EM - New charges

Just a question on Aberdeen Emerging markets fund – its well known they are introducing a 2% charge on this popular fund, is this limited solely to new investors? Meaning existing investors will be able to continue contributions without this charge or will it apply to all new deposits regardless of previous investment status?

As far as I know it is on all new purchases.

  • That’s what I thought – quite annoying for previous investors who were there for the long term (although I realise the charge goes towards the fund itself).

I’m looking for an emerging markets fund to have as a small proportion of my portfolio – Aberdeen really did seem to fit the bill but I’m probably coming in at the wrong time (in view of charges and soft closure). Maybe I should just go with it.

Anyone have any thoughts on other emerging market funds?

Or any thoughts on JPM EM (similar holdings in big SE Asia tech but significant holding in Indian property development)?

I received a letter from Fidelity last week advising me that they would not even be offering AEM on their funds list from 15 April as they did not support Aberdeen's decision to establish an initial charge. So I can't buy any more through them even if I was prepared to pay the 2% :(

I think many people are looking to First State Global Emerging Market Leaders as a substitute but FS's investment policy is quite defensive compared to Aberdeen.

First State Global Emerging Market Leaders has an excellent track record.

Newton Emerging Income is a new fund, but is doing very nicely so far...
