Any disadvantage to fabric sofas?

Options
If we are talking about a similar price to a leather sofa would there be anything noticeable, or any cons to buying fabric. I have had leather sofas, but am moving into my own flat and want to buy my own now. I like the colours of the fabric ones, but don't want to spend too much. So for a few hundred quid is fabric any worse in terms of comfort, cleaning etc.?

  • They are more difficult to clean, that's why we choose leather as we both get allergies. We both used to get static shocks too when we had a fabric sofa but that is probably only with a synthetic fabric. Fabric are warmer to sit on though and can look cosier.

Fabric sofas are, in my opinion, generally cosier. You can get them treated with scotchguard, which works a treat and which we got the shop to throw in for free.

They will always be a bit more difficult to keep spotless though. We have two dogs, and sadly I have to put covers over our sofa to avoid the odd doggy footprint, which has happened in the past, and which I have been able to remove, but usually with a bit of effort.

I imagine leather would be easier to keep clean - we would have got a leather sofa for that reason, but unfortunately one of the dogs has a penchant for eating leather items and as such I couldn't risk it!

Fabric sofas can be kept clean very easily by using a decent steam cleaner.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I can get my fabric sofa looking fairly decent with a steam cleaner but nowhere near as easy to keep looking good as a leather one.

Our sofas are about 12 years old and look brand new still. They're red fabric though. So far our 2.5 year old hasn't managed to get anything on them that's stained. :D

I went looking for 2 x 2seater fabric recliner sofa's electric recline. Ended up with 2 x 2 seater Leather ones instead.

Worst thing I did. They are cold in winter, clammy in summer and not very comfortable . And they cost £3k !

Mine are covered up with fur throws. If you can get fabric, get it IMO

That is one thing that used to annoy me. On really hot days I could not even sit on the leather sofa at my mum's place as it trapped the heat. If you sat there long enough you would be sweating like a pig.
