Anyone with any advice for makeup please help!

Options
Hello,

Our wedding is rapidly approaching and i've booked the hairdressers and makeup person who is also in the salon, i'm meant to be going for a trial in 2 weeks but am having doubts. I dont really like the people in the salon they are friendly enough but everytime I go there, they are on about having split from their husbands or going out on the town pulling and ask 20 questions etc and it's just not me! They are also insisting I get there for 9am on the day when i'm not getting married until mid afternoon?! There is another salon just round the corner where I could get my hair done and they arent so invasive so i'm kinda thinking I might get my hair done there instead but they dont have anyone who does makeup, so....I thought I might attempt it myself. I'm in my late 20's my skin is I would say good condition no spots or dry or oily etc, but I never wear makeup inless we are going out and then it's normally quick foundation, eye shadow, mascara and lippy so havent got a clue about makeup. I would like it just to look pretty and natural rather than thick covering. Do you think i'm crazy for thinking about doing it myself. I was going to go to a makeup counter and get them to do it and buy the products so I could do it myself on the day, but I dont know what brand to go for? There was another board that said MAC but i've looked on their website and the nearest is an hours drive from me. If anyone has any advice or websites which would be helpful that would be great. Thanks :)

    Hi,

I'm in almost the same boat as you! Same age and doing my own make up but getting jittery about it! I really don't want anybody doing it for me and I do it every day so I don't know why this is a problem! If you're not used to doing your make up very often try having a look at youtube for make up tutorials - only seen a couple but seem to be some good ones out there. I thought about MAC too but like you there's not one for miles. If you're not going to be comfortable with that salon then I say cancel it - you don't need to be worrying about it

  • I wouldn't go to that salon if you aren't comfortable. However I wouldn't do my own either personally. I'm like you and don't do make up much except for going out and I really wouldn't be able to do it well enough. Plus I know a professional will take into account the right type of foundation for camera flashes, will emphasise without going overboard on my favourite features and will be able to cover a spot on the day (something I've never managed to do lol). Plus I just want to be pampered and have a glass of bubbly without worrying about it making my hands wobbly.

That is just me though. I understand other people will likely be different and if you're up for it then go for it and save some cash. Alternatively you could ask the new salon if they could recommend someone for you? They probably have people they are used to working in partnership with. Or do you have a friend that's particularly handy with a make up brush?

I was thinking about doing it myself, and went to the Bobbi Brown counter in John Lewis the other day. The girl was great, found a foundation that matched, and with powder on top gave the matte, natural look I wanted, also concealers, blush and a great lippy. Was a free 20 min makeover. The products seemed really nice too.
But tbh as I don't normally wear foundation and am a bit cack handed, I was so impressed by how I looked after, it made me more convinced I wanted a makeup artist! Preferably one that uses Bobbi Brown though!

I would recommend giving them a go, it's free and they explain stuff as they do it. You could also just look around for a mobile makeup artist that would come out to you? There are usually some advertised in local free wedding magazines.

Loads of tutorials on youtube if you want to get some suggestions - try Lisa Eldridge, she's very knowledgeable and lovely and calming to watch. In my experience many beauticians subscribe to the more is more approach so you may be more comfortable doing it yourself if you've had a few trial runs.

Thanks for all your replies, i've just come from my hair trial at the other place that doesnt do the makeup and am really glad I gave them a go, they made me feel really comfortable and didnt stress me out at all or panicy and my hair looked fab so am going to go with them and cancel the other place.

Thats good to know about John Lewis will go and have a look there I think as a starting point, I can always buy lippy if i'm not sure. And will have a look at those youtube videos as wasnt sure where to start with youtube as theres so many.

Normally I use to have pearl or fruit facial for every one month before marriage.I am also taking care of my face by daily doing a fruit massage for 15 minutes in home. This really for me.No pimples and black heads I use to be fresh all the time.

I went to the Benifit makeup counter and asked about makeup, we did a quick makeup trial, foundation etc I asked for natural but I wasnt sure about it all to be honest, First there was some kind of white stuff, then another, then primer and then foundation then blusher and it did look natural but I think if anything it highlighted any lines rather than hide them and made me look abit tired, we moved onto the eyes and the eye shadow just blended then I had this brown powder liner which I think just made my eyes look smaller and again tired, by the time we got to Mascara i'de had enough and called it a day, it just felt quite heavy on but that might be because I dont wear makeup normally. Then came home and washed it off to be honest i'm back to square one. I think it's confirmed that I dont want someone doing my makeup though. So I think the next step for me is to have a look on you tube and just go to boots to get some makeup. The lady did say that I need to moisturise any ideas on what to buy to do this? I really am useless when it comes to things like this!

Try the Bare Minerals counter. Their products are a lot lighter and foolproof so you could do your own.

Thanks will have a look at body shop, I love their vanilla hand cream so might stand a chance.

I will check out Bare Min's and see how I go with that one.

I did find that the Benefit make my face feel alittle itchy after 30 or so mins.

What are your thoughts on Clinique?
