Hi,yes chains are a lot more expensive to replace because it is a sump off job, mine will cost me £570.00 at an independant and £705.00 at vauxhall, just because GM knowingly fitted inferioe parts to start with and the oil changes are much too far appart

You dont have to adhere to vauxhalls oil regime.
Most vauxhall 3 pots i see never have any oil in them because owners think they make their own oil and usually dont even know where the bonnet catch is or how to top up, even though its in the new learner driver curriculum.

Even stone death owners must hear the rat tap a tap of the engine before the chain screams my adjuster isnt working because theres no oil in me or its turned to tar?

These cars once they leave manufacturers warranty rarely get oil and filters because people dont think its necessary because it always starts dear even in that bad snow we had.

im not surprised vauxhall say go away

    not at all at all.........
  • I'm a timing belt man, I hate the idea of how complicated a chain is to change!

My last car, a 2003 Rover 75, was on it's first chain at 200k and it was silent, but there's stories of them getting rattly. It's pretty much an engine rebuild on that car, too.

Belts all the way, leisurely afternoon with the beers and it's done.

Any chain driven Corsa I always listen for chain clatter, its a common fault, but from experience its due to neglect. The chain adjuster/plunger gets gummed up due to infrequent oil changes resulting in a £300 chain/adjuster/timing cover replacement.

Timing belts, albeit quieter, give no warning of impending failure though. At least a noisy chain 'should' alert the owner of a need to change.

Mine's done 60,000, still as quiet as a church mouse. I change the oil and filter every 5,000.

It isn't generally the chain or belt that fails, it's the tensioner pulleys.

Vauxhalls of a certain age were prone to tensioner failure leading to belts being thrown off and engines trashed. Some models (especially the 2l) would often self-destruct 20,000 miles after a belt kit change.

You only ever hear about the bad designs -- and there are plenty of camchain designs out there that routinely outlast the engines they're installed in. Why is it that people go out and buy cars with known, serious faults, then moan when they go bang?

If the chain eats its way through the case then it needs replacing urgently.

Chain and tensioners, People still dont seem to like changing the tensioners.

I have a couple to show people, See this belt that looks new. Its running on this plastic pulley. They look and say that looks OK.

I show them the inside and its riddled with cracks, Starting at the centre where its bonded to the bearing.

I tell them every time the cars started its just a waiting game, Do you want just a belt or the belt kit with tensioner and pulleys.

    I'm the reverse.

Belt, tensioner and water pump if it's run off the belt. Every time. The difference in price is what, £60?

I've had an argument with a main dealer before who stated that the tensioner replacement was unnecessary (Mitsubishi). In the end I took the car elsewhere as I wasn't happy with their answers.

If the engine's in bits, replace all semi-consumable parts that are hard to get to at the same time. It's no different to replacing the clutch at the same time the gearbox has to come out.
