Storing butter at room temperature

Hi alex,
I keep butter out of the fridge in a (very small) covered butter dish. This means that it regularly gets used, washed and refilled and doesn't have time to go off. I only ever put it in the fridge if the weather is very warm.
We have an existing thread with more opinions:
Storing butter at room temperature
I'll add your thread to it later to keep the replies together.

So according to him - stuff left lying out should be tossed in the bin? Well only one reaction to that - grab the bin bags hon and toss a few of his things in.
And I would be sending him out for another packet of butter too - let him see how expensive it is .......... or make sure he has "stork" on toast for a while. (no offence to peeps who like stork - but although I use it in baking I HATE it on hot toast)
Its a great story to save up for the girlfriends in future though - with tuts and rolling eyes of course LOL

We divide the butter in half - put half in the fridge and half in a little ramekin, and refill as needed. But my lot are not that keen on butter so it does last a few days. I was trained by my granny who hated the butter going in the fridge. My kids who were all born in hot climates have only just finally learnt to leave it out - they would automatically put it in the fridge because in Asia it would just melt!
Incidently, did you know you can freeze straight olive oil, and spread it just like the olive oil margarine? No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!0 -

I do think that some of us may be being a bit hard on OP's son. If he's just a kid and no one's told him otherwise, how would he know? I do agree that he shouldn't have tossed it without express permission but he may have thought he was doing his mum a favourshandyclover wrote: »Incidently, did you know you can freeze straight olive oil, and spread it just like the olive oil margarine?
I wouldn't use it (butter girl through and through) but it's definitely handy to know!0 -
Our butter is always out, in a butter dish, unless it is too hot that it would melt.0

This.
I love butter - we don't use the 'm' word in this house - but it's a nuisance to spread when it's been in the fridge!
Snap, we don't use the m word either, and refer to it the same way! Glad its not just me!
I don't use very much butter at all, unless baking. Mainly use it in cooking. When i use a butter it is often from the freezer, and with a really sharp cleaver i can often get it in halfish lenthways quite easily. Then i let the half defrost and cut that in half lengthways again...becuas i like the long thin shap that leaves:o then half goes in the fridge, half in th ebutter dish in the cupboard. Our kitchen is north east facing and cool, it never gets hot in there.0 -

LiR, I'm SO glad you said that! I said in the arms that I only eat butter, I wouldn't give the other stuff house room and was called a snob :rotfl:
I just like to enjoy my foodAnd all bar one said I was wrong! I actually couldn't believe it.

I am getting rather used to being unpopularso maybe my shared view shouldn't make tou to comfortable! But we love butter, and use little of it. We don't have much bread, and when we do might also use mayonnaise or oil, depending on how and what we are eating. A little real butter at the rate we use it i am confident is not going to be our health down fall, but is a taste highlight! The m word makes me feel a little queasy, though i know i have eated it at friends' homes and in bought food, but the idea of it just doesn't appeal for me in my own home.
