Aargh - what's going on with my hair?!

It's shoulder length and very fine. I washed it yesterday and used a sachet of conditioner left over from when I last dyed it a few weeks ago. When I went to dry it, it was all greasy and coated on the top, so I bunged it in an Alice band, assuming I'd got distracted and hadn't rinsed it properly. Just washed it again and made sure I scrubbed the top hard to try and get any residue out; didn't use conditioner this time. I've dried it again and it's pretty much the same on top - looks and feels awful, and I have a horror of greasy hair. I don't use anything leave-in or mousses/gels or anything like that; I suspect it's some of that bog-awful conditioner not gone yet. Maybe I should've shampooed it twice. I just used Lidl shampoo which has always been fine before. Don't think it's anything medical, but are there any shampoos guaranteed to strip yuck out of hair? I'm off to Sainsburys in a bit to see what I can find.

Hi Tiglath, this happened to me as a teenager around 15 years ago, was going to a party and was so mortified - after 4 shampoos and partial dries (my mum washing my hair over the bath to make sure it was done properly) we realised that it was the shampoo - at the time i was using l'oreal elvive or something and it was the silicone which had just kept building up. I would try a few washes with a different shampoo before getting one that is going to strip all the good oils out of your hair. I am no expert, but I think that any clarifying shampoo should do the job - just condition well after it to try to replace the nutrients.
My heart goes out to you - I still remember the trauma from when it happened to me!!
ETA - with me the build up became very noticeable very quickly, which is why we didn't think it was the shampoo in the first place so I wouldn't discount the shampoo being the root cause.0 -
Thanks - I've just picked up some Elvive Nutri-gloss Light to see if that works (unfortunately I've just spotted that it contains dimethicone - should've taken my glasses). Didn't see anything obvious for 'clarifying.' If it doesn't work, I'll use washing-up liquid! DH has suggested white spirit
It must get sorted before I got to work tomorrow - it feels all wrong. It's only at the roots - the length and ends are fine.
I must admit I've been using Elvive conditioner (the red bottle) for a couple of months so maybe that's the culprit - I'll leave that off for a few days to see how I get on, and change to another conditioner if it seems to be the problem. Perhaps I should just mix and match more often - if I find a product I like I tend to stick with it."Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000 -
Well that's no better with the new shampoo - now it's still greasy at the roots, but the rest is like straw. Will see what I can find in Boots tomorrow. Looks like tomorrow is Alice band territory which I hate."Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000

Pantene do a clarifying shampoo which removes buildup and residue:

I use it a couple of times a week.
I imagine it is the shampoo that's making your hair greasy. I had the same problem before switching shampoo. I wonder if it's because people tend to use straighteners and heat treatments on their hair these days, so they've decided to put more oil in the shampoos to protect the hair. That's my theory, anyway0 -
If your still struggling, a good couple of scrubs with head and shoulders usually takes all the build up out. I have very thick long hair which I have layered and thinned out every 3 months, but I use argan oil and softening shampoos and tons of conditioner. After a good cut I do a little bit of head and shoulders just to refresh and deep cleanse my hair. Have a go!0

I have just put on one of the new l'oreal mousse colours £8.99 from Boots, it stank awful, has not done my roots and my hair feels like an oil slick!
Do not recommend it at all and am going to have to wash my hair again in the morning before work!:mad:0 -
I had this problem and someone on here recommended using Listerine to rinse with. Sounds odd and makes your scalp tingle but worked immediately0

I have washed and conditioned my hair this morning and luckily the gunk has gone, hair feels nice and shiny. The colour is not bad, darker than I expected but and it is a big but, it has not done anything to my roots or around the hair line!
I am going to have to do again with the left over colourant within the next few days which is annoying!0 -
No commercial shampoo will clarify that level of build up - get washing with washing up liquid and use a heavy duty conditioner on the ends only.
If that still doesn't work, crush up a dishwasher tablet and mix it in with the washing up liquid, that should shift anything.
