Peugeot 308 automatic with 30000 miles and still under warranty. Suspect rear brake pads and discs need replacing as there is a grinding sound (sometimes) on breaking, particularly on a hard break. What would the ball-park figure for this job be? I'm assuming this wont be covered under warranty as would be considered wear-and-tear.

go to eurocarparts and put your registration in to see the cost of parts - no idea what the book time would be maybe an hour per axle

Depending on the quality of the pads you buy you could pay £15 - £30 for the set of pads. Discs on your car model seem expensive around £50 each on the rear from eurocarparts.

If you can find a good garage you might be able to get them fitted for £20. (As I did mine recently) Otherwise supply and fit would cost you about £50 more.

Best to take it in for a brake check (not a 'free one' eg Halfords or Kwick Fit just read the board!)

Autos eat brake pads, and a grinding noise might mean that the pads and discs will need changing. However, 30k for the rears sounds a bit rapid, although on an auto the fronts would certainly be suspect. Are you sure it's the rear?

i paid £90 for front pads and disks on my old focus last year but it was a small independant garage, not main dealer.

Sounds like it's coming from behind me when it happens although it's not always there.

Where can I find thread re free brake checks?

New good quality parts will be about £100, plus labour. I would assume 1 -2 hours work, so could easily add another £100 on top.

Will be alot less if just pads are needed.

Rear pads and discs, as suspected. Dealer quoted £390 and then came down to £340 when I said I'd phone around. Also said that front pads had about 2 weeks of life left and quoted £480 for both jobs. My regular service garage quoted £234 for rears and then £330 for front and rear. When I got there and asked for rock bottom price, he came down to £300. Been out from 8.15 til 4.00, so in a way, my whole day has been wasted BUT I've saved myself close to £200. Oh, and I did pick up a few unnecessary purchases whilst wiling all those hours away - so maybe not such a big saving after all!

It's not always about what you save, but about what you spend... and £234 still sounds very expensive for rear pads & discs, which any competent mechanic should be able to do in under an hour.

How long has the noise been present? If more than a couple of days, you may need new discs, but if you have not gone far since it began, they may be OK with a clean up, which mainly involves "roughing Up" the surface, to clean of surface corrosion and "bed in" the new pads.

£234 for rear pads and discs is not excessive nowadays, but do ask to see the used parts. Not saying that they WILL defraud you, but have seen it done when I worked in the trade.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
