My dearly departed Mum Had a Cardboard Coffin ( she was buried in a green burial site).
It caused many a laugh amongst us as it was purchased 5y years before she died and was kept in the spare room !!
It was purchased in advance so that my neice could paint it for her GCSE art project, it looked brilliant all decorated with a woodland scene and Rainbows.
How fantastically personal and meaningful. A really lovely idea. your daughter did her grandmother proud.0 -

Thank you, It really made us smile on what was obviously a sad day.
Mind you some of the more "distant relatives" didn't really know how to react at my smileing (and a little giggle) as she was lowered into the ground.
The aforementioned coffin had given us many laughs over the years, Her new neighbors were moving in the day it was delivered - imagine their surprise as when my mum had to break off from introducing herself with the lines "oh ,must leave you to it,my coffins just arrived..........."0 -
Thanks for the laughs :rotfl: On a serious note, if you're thinking of getting a painted wicker one or painting one yourself, just to let you know my friend's husband had great trouble finding a pink wicker one for her to be cremated in as the crematorium were very fussy about the paint used. Just a thought
Nottslass, that is just beautiful x0 -
After having to go through the process of making funeral arrangements for my late dad recently this is something which my OH and I have discussed in a little detail.
I quite like the idea of a cardboard coffin and getting any remaining family and friends to write farewell messages on it, in a similar way to leavers day at school where we all wrote on each others school shirts! I'm not sure if that would creep a few people out though.
I think they would probably be too upset, nice idea though.
My mum prepaid and planned her own funeral, which was a lot less upsetting than having to do it from scratch. I didn't want the details beforehand although I was aware she had done it.
I think we find thinking about the details of own funeral less upsetting (obviously when we are thinking of it as something that is a good way off) than that of a loved one. I have all sorts of ideas for minebut DH won't talk about it.

I saw a programme on tv last year about woollen coffins, they looked lovely, homely and comfy.
Apparently there was a law years ago that bodies had to be buried in woollen garments and this company decided to make the woollen coffins as an additional line to their fine textiles.

This is taking cost cutting to the extreme.. Haha
But a good idea all the same!
I'll get one ordered for my partner.. Only the best will do :0)0 -
I buried my father in a cardboard coffin about 10 years ago but when my husband died the funeral director said that new rules mean that cardboard coffins have to be treated with so many chemicals to make them meet regulations that their 'environmental footprint' rates very poorly compared to a simple soft wood coffin. He showed me an article in one of his magazines to back up what he said so I did choose a simple pine one instead.
I must say I have always liked the idea of the wicker one but not just yet.
ps - i do like the GCSE art project coffin, grandma must have been so proud
aims for 2014 - grow more fruit and veg, declutter0 -

We did this at my Dads funeral last year, he didn't have a cardboard coffin though - we used marker pens. It was very touching seeing everyone get up to write their personal messages to him. It did take longer than anticipated though, but that was because he was so very loved by so many. It was a celebrant who did the service, not sure if it would be 'allowed' at a regular funeral. Some people see the glass half full, others see the glass half empty - the enlightened are simply grateful to have a glass0 -
Lol love it! Some wonderfully funny posts...OH came in and was told it was £99 for the cardboard one...he asked why I didn't just order something from Amazon and reuse the box!
