Cat has wee'd somewhere and we can't find it.

Hi,

My cat has wee'd somewhere upstairs and the whole top floor stinks but I cannot find it anywhere! He did it 2 days ago and the smell is still as bad as ever I have sprayed cat neutreliser stuff and febreeze over all the carpets,(on the first day!) opened all the windows to air the place and it still stinks!

There is no stains on the carpet anywhere and although I can tell the smell is coming from my daughters bedroom I cannot tell where it doesn't seem to be stronger in one particular area!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to combat the smell!

They've never done this before but my Mum brought her dog up for the Easter weekend and its frightened the cats.

Thank you x

Have you stripped your daughter's bed? Looked under it? Checked the curtains? What about inside drawers and wardrobes?
  • Quite often if a cat is upset at an intruder (the dog), it may spray to mark the territory. Check the carpet again, but I would be looking about 18 inches higher - up the edge of the bed, curtains, etc. Hope you get it sorted!

I agree that it's more likely to be spraying.
DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.

You need to get a UV light, this will show where the cat wee is - it will glow flourescent. Not sure where you get these, I got one from a Police friend as they use them to check for markings on stolen goods. I'm sure ebay or Amazon will have something though.

Usually it's an un-neutered Tom if the smell is that bad though - is there a chance one has got into your house (assuming yours in neutered). Edit - just read your post, about the dogs...aww poor kitty.
Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!
  • I got a UV light (sometimes called a 'black light') from R&L Pet Supplies. They also sell a spray called 'URINE OFF' which digests the cat pee so getting rid of it entirely. I have used this product and it works well if you follow their advice. http://www.rlpetproducts.co.uk/store/cats/hygiene/ (They also do a combination packet which sells both together) If the pee is in something absorbant it is best to soak up the pee 1st as much as possible but if it has soaked in you may need more than one application. If the pee is in bedding which can be removed and washed, wash in biological washing powder 1st but you will still need to use the product as your cat will still be able to smell it and so pee there again.

I don't know where your cat normally does it's toilet but cats will pee in odd places when they have been upset in some way. It may be something like you have changed the litter box, they think it too dirty / too clean or it has moved. There may be another cat which has upset them. So if you can find the source of the problem this will also make the peeing problem go away.

    Good luck.

Being neutered on Thursday :( bloody typical! I will order a black light the smell is subsiding now I keep spraying the floors with fe breeze and cat odour stuff and I've been round all the walls, under the bed and along the wardrobes and cleaned them as well. Thank you for all the help x
