Petrol station measurements - are they right!
Options
Hi
I thought I heard something on the news the other week about how quite a few petrol stations have pumps that are not measuring correctly. I filled up my tank the other day and I paid more for my fuel that usual. It was unfortunately only as i got home I thought about it. I was only given a credit card receipt which doesn't list how much fuel i got for my money, but someone else raised the same concern a few days later.
Does anyone know how you can go about reporting a suspicion and getting someone to test the pumps. i might, as a precaution, not buy my fuel from there for a while and see what happens but it is a busy station in our area. Last year the garage was caught up in a scandal over card fraud. The people were arrested and the lease recinded but the cousin of the fraudster apparently has taken over!
If anyone has any suggestions, it would be good to hear from you.
Thanks

If you have any concerns about the pumps not being correctly calibrated, it is best to contact your local council and ask for the Trading Standards Officer. They have the power to do spot checks on the pumps to find out if they are measuring correctly and I believe can proescute if there appears to be an anomoly .0

believ it or not pumps are allowed to dispense 1% less than they read, they are checked regularly by trading standards, contact them with your suspicionsspeed is good0

I'm not entirely sure the the franchise holder would have the ability to alter the amount the pumps dispense
All the majors have contracts with maintenance companies [such as Gilbarco] who totally look after the running of the pumps.
That's not to say that they couldn't try to get one of the engineers to 'adjust' the pumps0 -
