Money Unavaialble

Options
Recently we had a problem at the supermarket checkout, that resulted in a double charge to our HSBC current account

we only got one till receipt but our account was charged twice

this second charge is now stuck in allocated waiting for the supermarket to claim it,

so its not available to us to spend as it is not in our available balance

The supermarket say they can't claim it as they got the amount we owed them, (and this is showing on our bank statement)

The bank say it will drop off and will become available to us soon but can't tell us when

So dose anyone know how long this will take as we would like to use this money for other purchases

we now have to keep an extra amount in our account to cover this lost money so we have funds to cover our Direct Debits

Up to 7 days or so...possibly a little longer due to the Bank and Public Holiday.

Did the supermarket issue you with two receipts? One should say sale cancelled or words to that effect, they are supposed to do so in such scenarios.

If you have proof of non-sale then the bank can remove these "ghost" transactions.
  • No we were told the first transaction failed and was supposedly cancelled by the till operator, who asked us to re enter our details again

the second time we did this it produced a till receipt for the correct amount

so we entered our details twice but only got one till receipt, the supermarket checked their till roll and only one transaction showed up

The bank checked my account and confirmed that two authorisations were made within a minute of each other

The first transaction is still held by my bank as "pending" and the amount is not available to us in our available balance

The second transaction as been posted to our bank statement

So my question was how long will my bank hold the first transaction amount in "Pending" before releasing it to my available balance

The CA at my bank didn't know the answer to this apart from saying "in a few days" its now been over a week and they are still holding it as "Pending"

First reply is from someone 'on the inside' (3-5 working days equates to my "up to 7 days" reply above).

Second reply reports a speedier resolution when they were assertive with their bank. Generally it's the store's merchant acquirer that removes the hold, but this shows the bank can have a say too!

Google "pre-authorisation debit card" for more info.
  • Thanks that was so helpful

After reading the other thread I will go back to HSBC on Tuesday and see what I can do

but its put me off using my bank card again, think I will go back to using cash

...or credit card. Pre-authorisations don't appear on your credit card statement...they only affect your available credit (limit). A little like you're experiencing now, but without the pain!

    Its 14 days.

Why has it put you off using the card.... How many times have you used the card? How many times has this happened?

Also if it ever happens again. make sure you get a VOID reciept from the supermarket... Even if it means standing there and NOT reentering the transaction, till you get it.
Does a till person know how the banking process works... No. Just the same as a member of the bank, not know about supermarket processes.

From memory you deal with these on a daily basis?

Not that I don't believe you ;), but can you provide a link to a source for that? Also, is it 14 working days or just 14 days?

Reason I ask is that the OP's question seems to get asked a lot on here.

Got no link, but that is how long they can sit there if a retailer does not claim the auth. From experiance and also how long we monitor for fraud.
Its 14 days, or as many people like to say 10 working days... But when your department is open 7 days... Its easier to simply say 14 days.

I bank with HSBC and had a similar a couple of weeks ago.

It was an online purchase that failed which was a Thursday, the money became available again on the Tuesday.

This is part of the online response I got

"Also, please note that the pending transaction will be removed from the authorisation status automatically and the funds would become available to use, if the retailer or the beneficiary bank do not claim the payment within 3-5 days. However they can claim it later, if they do have the authorisation code."
    Bad luck breeds bad luck.

    Damn I'm doomed.
