Didn't want to pay for parking - went home.

I went to Reading around 7 this evening (Saturday) to collect something, and decided I might go into the town to have a bite since I was there.
Except I couldn't find anywhere to park that didn't want to charge me for the pleasure of spending my money there.
So I turned around and headed for home, picking up something to eat and a bottle of plonk from the supermarket on the way.
The council's greed led me to spend nothing.

I dont think councils are bothered they get the rates regardless and as for parking it seems a nice little earner for them with parking fees and fines0

And they wonder why people do not shop in town.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

Im with you all the way, think how much you saved by not eating out too.
York Council car park charges are horrific, luckily we have family who live just inside the City walls, but have had to park occasionally elsewhere. £12 for a few hours, but the tourists still pack in to the city.
Isnt the term 'short and curlys'make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I live in Sheffield - we don't go to into town very often because your have to pay for parking and the road system was designed by a sadist. We will either go to Meadowhall or Rotherham Parkgate retail park.
If we do decide to go into town we go on a Sunday when it's free parking.0 -

Expect York would prefer people to visit by rail/bus so set prices higher to act as a deterent ?0

My local council, Manchester, decided to extend on-street parking charges from 8am to 8pm. By law they couldn't say they were putting up the charges to "make more money", so commissioned an environmental report based on four days worth of data to reach the following conclusion:
People were driving around Manchester City Centre looking for a car parking spot, this lead to congestion and this, in turn, lead to more pollution occurring in Manchester.
This was based on 4 days worth of research.
Their consultation paper was sent out to various groups and authorities and - amusingly - some of them were council-affiliated and - unsurprisingly - overwhelmingly agreed with the council wanting to increase charges.
Have to admire their audacity.0 -
Motorists are mere cash cows to councils.0
