Help! How to book an extra bag - remotely!

Please can anyone help? My son is returning this week from 9 months studying in Chile. He will have an extra bag to bring home; he's already ditched all non-essentials, e.g. most of his clothing & shoes, but his laptop, his notes & dissertation, his recordings of dialects etc. can't be ditched and neither can the presents that the Andean villagers have sent for us & his lecturers. He's flying with Delta, first to Atlanta then after a 12 hour stopover, on to Heathrow. He's almost out of money & his bank card runs out tomorrow. They didn't send the new one in time for us to send it out to him; the post takes about 3 weeks.

Delta's website states that you can book extra bags in when checking in online, not more than 24 hours before your flight. By which time his card has run out, anyway. But according to Air France, their UK partners, you can't any more, because of volatile fuel prices; you have to pay at the airport. Which he won't be able to, as his card will have run out... I've tried ringing Delta in the US to see if I can pay for it, but there's no-one there at the weekend, nor will there be until Tuesday. I've investigated getting it courier'd back but it seems that'll cost about £300 as opposed to (probably) £70 for one bag.

Does anyone know of a way I can book this bag in & pay for him? He's getting quite panicky, understandably, at the thought of having nothing concrete to show for 9 months hard work...

  • Could he call you from the airport and you give your card details to the agent?
  • Or you could ask on Twitter @deltaassist

Pro tem, I've transferred some money to him which he can get out in cash tonight, before the card runs out, & change into dollars in Santiago on Monday, which hopefully they will accept at the airport. Failing that he'll have to ring me from the airport, as Thomas Hardy suggests. I've never done Twitter but now is obviously the time to learn...
