Warning and can they legally do this?

I bought gift cards to the value of £150 in Morrisons as I waanted to buy a Kindle Fire next door in Currys/PC World (and gain 15p per litre off M's petrol). The purchase was fine but I had to return the Kindle as it was overheating and cutting out (a problem that I researched on the internet was all too common). The refund was fine UNTIL they said as I had paid by gift card that was how it has to be refunded. Does anyone know different? I spoke to the manager but they wouldn't budge on policy. Now I am stuck with gift card as I do not need anything from the store. DOH!!!! 15p per litre off petrol wasn't worth it!

Couldn't you just ask for a replacement Kindle Fire?

They should refund to the method of purchase - and even the exact credit/debit card too. Most stores now do this.

So, yes they can refund to a gift card in this case.

Just use the gift card for shopping. Then you'll have the money back in your account.

I would imagine the gift card is for Currys and not Morrisons.

Yes, they can legally do this. The reason they refund to same method of payment is usually for money laundering reasons. Currys didn't even have to offer you the refund at all, they could have just offered a replacement Kindle. So why not just swap the Kindle, and you will have exactly what you wanted in the first place...

Maybe or maybe not, it all depends on how soon after purchase the fault appeared.
It it was faulty when purchased or the fault appeared shortly afterwards, then the OP had the right to a full refund if they wished and Currys would not have had the right to insist they accepted a replacement or repair.

Even if you don't need the gift cards now you might in the future. I would have thought the vouchers would be at least valid for a year. Or do what I do when I have vouchers that I don't need swap them for cash with my family when I know they need something from that shop.

One of your friends or family might be looking to buy something from Currys/PC World - you could mention something on Facebook.
  • Just out of interest why would you think it's illegal for them to do this?

meaning: are they within their rights to refuse me another method (I did offer to accept on my credit card in case of money laundering suspicions)
