Plants for shade?
I'm hoping you guys may be able to help me.
At the front of our house we have a silly little patch of garden that is in the shade most of the day (gets a little sun in the evening).
The previous owners tried to gravel it (unsuccessfully) so the soil is pretty poor (although the general area is clay -y).
There are a some daffodil and crocus bulbs and couple of unnamed bushes growing there that just get out of control and look a mess.
I would really like to dig it all up and start again. Can anyone suggest some plants that would be suitable for the area? Either some little bushes or some other plants that would give interest all year round.
Thanks
Sharra

You can find an amazing range of ferns, we had a super fern garden in a shady corner of our last garden.0

Ive got a shady bit in my garden too, only gets the sun for about an hour a day. Ive planted a lovely red acer there and lots of different ferns and they are all thriving...the acer is a nice splash of colour in a dark corner0

Hostas normally do well in the shade, but beware, slugs love 'em!0

I've planted a "Bleeding Heart" in my shady spot, flowers in April, and is quite a nice shaped plant. Seems to be able to look after itself as well.

Ferns, pulmonarias (lungwort), lily of the valley all grow well in our shady bit. And blinkin' comfrey! Bleeding heart (dicentra) is a good choice; ours has a spread of about 4 feet at the moment and is very pretty.Nelly's other Mr. Hyde0
