DD Having Visual Problems At School-Too Stubborn To Say!

Thanks for all the replies!
DD has worn glasses since she was 18 months old and has had operations on her "blind" eye. We have taken her to specialists and her vision will not improve with age but will probably get worse. She is registered as blind/partially sighted, but nobody knows this apart from her and whomever she choses to tell. We have never treated her differently and she has achieved alot in her little life...we are very proud:A
Called the school today and spoke with her head of year. We are making an appointment later this week to meet together, so that we can get our heads together. DD seemed calmer today and more confident which is good-I think she is relieved:D She got 94% on her Maths exam so she was well chuffed with that-I asked what she would have got if she could have seen the board:rotfl:
When she took her 11+ the council offered her the large print version, but TBH it was HUGE and she had difficulty turning the pages when she asked to view it beforehand, so she refused and just took the normal paper.
I am sure it will turn out all ok, but I just wanted to say thanks for all the great replies.

I agree with everyone else about having a word with the school, and I'm certain it's for the best you are already doing that.
As a teacher, at the start of the school year, I often seat pupils in alphabetical order, and they tend to stay there as long as I can keep it up. I only see my pupils once each week, and have a large number of classes, so it's an easy way for me to learn their names. However, by this stage in the year, everyone should know your DD's name, and I'm sure there will be no problem in her moving seats.
Most colleagues are only too happy to provide bigger type-face on handouts, as long as they are aware of the problem. I can understand her embarrassment, but as long as you reassure her that it to make sure that the teachers get it right, I'm sure she'll be fine.
Earlier in the year, a year 8 pupil asked to speak to me, then burst into tears because she had to have hearing aids. I knew that she had some hearing loss, but did not realise it was that bad. We had a chat, mostly me telling her that after a week or two, something else would happen in the class, and nobody would be the slightest bit bothered about her hearing aids any more. I also said that I didn't have a lot of experience of teaching hearing impaired pupils, so if I did something wrong, or which made life more difficult for her, she had to come and have a word. I explained that I wasn't doing it to be nasty to her, it was more a case of forgetting that she was special. 2 weeks later she came to show me her pink hearing aids, and she has got on really well ever since. I do check periodically that she understands what we are doing, and it's going well (she just passed another music exam with a merit!) I hope it works out for everyone.0 -
k60sav - I'm glad you got it diagnosed properly.
when they finally found my problem the consultant said that should I lose sight later in life then future technology may make it possible by then to fix the problem - this may well be the same you your ds.
The main thing is that we have not known any difference so have no concept of having 'lost' anything, this is our normal and we grow up the same as anyone else. I believe everyone is unique and different from everyone else, so we all grow up with our own 'differences'
Sound like things will work out fine for you son and penny-pinchers dd

Am glad you are going to speak to the school. Apart from your daughter's feelings on the matter, it would be very unfair to the teachers to expect them to do their job properly without all the information needed.
If your daughter's still upset, ask her to put herself in the teachers' place & how she would feel if she was doing a job with one hand tied behing her back or if something / an upset happened that could have been avoided, just because the school were in the dark about the extent of her problems."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0 -
Evening Guys!
Just to say that we met with the head of year earlier this week and all went well:D She has been switched around in the classes needed and the teachers are going to keep a good eye on her to make sure she is not struggling! If required, there is lots of help on offer but we will see how she gets on with this first.
Thanks
