This probably sounds a really stupid question but please bear in mind that I'm more than a bit technologically challenged.
I have a website that I don't actively promote but has a web counter.
Most months, I get around 400 hits but 99.9% of them are bots or spiders.
What does this signify (if anything)? Just curious to know really!

It means nobody's coming to your site except search engines0

The bots and spiders will be coming from the search engines and other sites that crawl the web analysing content.
So what it means is that you get 0.4 real people visiting you a month and the rest are computers.
To me it would signify that your site needs work to improve its search engine rankings as the SEs are aware of its existence, but it is being ignored/not appearing in search results.0 -
You could put Google Analytics on your site. It's free and you can then see how many real visitors you're getting and where they are geographically etc.0
