Looking on google at hourly rates for plumbers combined with call out fees etc, it's hard to say - some have very high rates! However, if you ring around a few in your area and ask what their hourly rate for a one-off job that shouldn't take more than hour, you should get a sensible price. I'd also ask a few friends/family if they know of anyone they can recommend.

I would guess the plumber would probably charge his basic call out fee + parts as it's not a job that should take any time at all.
However depending on region and plumber the call out charge could easily be £75...

If you've got any friends/neighbours who are good with DIY it's the sort of job they might do for a few pints :)

Personally my recommendation would probably be to get a couple of books out from the library (or watch some on youtube/read online), and give it a go, especially if, as is often the case with half decent plumbing jobs there is an isolator valve somewhere for that particular tap :).
A well thought out plumbing layout will normally have isolators for each tap/line, specifically so you don't have to turn the water off for the whole house just to replace a leaky washer on tap or clean the filters on a shower mixer.

There is 1 good point that has to be said for those diabolical devices, they do at least ensure that you have a valve inside the house so that it if possible to drain the short length of pipe that is inside the wall.
I guess not many people would bother to do this over winter, but this year is a good reason to pursue that, many solid copper installations simply omit the internal shut down valve, very short sighted.;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • I agree these outside tap connections are rubbish but, if you can get a good picture of the tap outside it may be one with built in non-return valves.

Common problem is the non-return valve in the tap,has frozen and got stuck closed, or cracked or split and stopped or reduced the flow of water. Often caused by not turning off the water inside and turning on the outside tap for the winter months.

It's the main reason that if we are fitting outside taps we are not allowed to use these anymore, we have to fit the non-return valve inside the building, but again not foolproof as if people don't turn off the water the water freezes and basically pushes the non-return valve back inside itself and blocks the water flow.
