Buildings Insurance - Payment taken as 'deposit' against next year's premium??

Has anyone else had a letter from Swinton telling them they're taking a payment 'to be used towards your price for next year'? I received a letter on 28th March saying £31.97 would be taken from my account on 2nd April. When I queried it, at first I was told it was the final payment on this year's premium, but if I didn't renew it would be refunded. When I questioned that, I was told I had paid this year's premium and that it is a deposit towards next year's premium. It's for my Buildings Insurance which isn't due until 1st May. It's too late to stop the payment for 2nd April, so I've asked for it to be refunded and am told it will be - so we will see how long it takes to get it back. I was just wondering how many other people had received letters like this?

Yes it is Swinton's normal pratice to do this.

I insured with them a couple of years ago and was advised of this when I took the policy out.

I did lapse the policy well before renewal time but, as promised, they took another payment.

They did refund the premium - can't remember how long it took. I know I accepted this when I took the policy out but I just don't like it and this is one of a few reasons that I would avoid using them in the future.

Read your last years docs - you'll find the info there.

Invoke the DD guarantee. They have taken money for a contract that has not yet been agreed or may not even be agreed by yourself.

They aren't breaching dd rules so the dd guarantee won't help.

This just looks to be another time where the ts and cs have been accepted without either reading them or understanding the horrors of Swinton.
