If you haven't got a test socket (remove the two screws holding the faceplate on to check) or your wall socket isn't a BT 'OpenReach' one then you probably need to get it replaced by BT or whoever you have your landline with.

There's also an un-needed wire called a 'bell wire' which should be removed from the faceplate, that can cause problems with speed as well.

Do you hear any noise on the line when you pick up the phone and press a button on it for example? It should be completely silent.

I can't post up any links yet because I'm a new user, but do a Google search for "Tips to Speed Up Your Broadband".

If you dropped the laptop, then it'll either boot or it won't, and if it will then any speed reduction is not going to be down to that.
And if it was, it would be slow offline as well, not just online.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

In which case it's a bit of a mystery, since 1mB/s is very slow when I took the computer elsewhere. Suppose I could move much nearer the server and go for a pub lunch, good excuse!

I ran Avast boot scan last night, as far as I can tell it hasn't come up with anything although it's unclear where it would indicate it. Malwarebytes comes up clean on the main scan as well as Avast.

Diagnostic passed on everything it tests.

you need to post your full line stats from the router, not just the connection rates. Post the attenuation up/down and snrm up/down (both in dBs) for a better idea of what's going on on your line..

ok, so it's definitely a throughput issue by the look of it. Either router, microfilter, or it's an ISP issue. If you can rule out the first two, it'll help when you contact your ISP.

The ISP supposed to be sending me a new box, but they have just texted me to say these won't arrive on Tuesday as originally scheduled. I have already changed the microfilters.

Just measured speeds near to the exchange at a local pub. It was 8.87mbps and 9.92mbps download speeds but 135ms and 151ms ping time which seems very long. This was using speedtest.net

It was 13.26 mbps using broadband speed checker.

iplayer seemed to work fine which is often a good practical test.

I've signed up for BT infinity, since even when the system was working the max was only 2mbps. Hopefully if there are any problems with the telephone sockets they can deal with that at the same time, because they send an Engineer around.

Fitted new box, same problem. O2 have suddenly decided they are probably throttling me down to 0.25mps because I'm on the basic package to make sure I don't go over the limit! But I've only used a quarter of my Monthly allowance in the last 2 weeks!

I haven't had problems of this magnitude until the last few weeks since they made various changes at the exchange. I think they have swapped over to Sky's system. Good job I'm leaving O2, they are wasting everyone's time.
