I'd be grateful for advice on persuading my PC to defragment. It won't progress beyond 0%, even if I restore to a previous date. WindowsME

Sorry! Windows METreat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

Have you turned off ALL items (screensavers, power saving, etc) that would cause the hard drive to be accessed? If not, every time the drive is looked at by any program or application, the defrag will loop back to the beginning.
If you can, running defrag in Windows Safe Mode is often worth a try.

This one below is a great help and sorts out the problem of running programs in the background.

DiskKeeper Lite is another fantastic piece of software.0

Only ever had trouble defragging once, and it was caused by virus scan software running (Macafee IIRC).
As previously suggested, turn off all programs first. I find easiest way is to CTRL ALT DEL and "end task" everything except "explorer" in the "close program" dialog box - it works for me on WIN 98.0 -
We seem to be breathing life into long-dead threads here.
Before this latest flurry of info, the last post was on 16 Sep - so I sispect that the OP has either solved or forgotten about the problem.0 -
O no I hadn't(forgotten about the problem). I was stuck (when I couldn't navigate in Safe Mode as suggested )until only yesterday when I heard of Protonic.com - an excellent site - which advised CNT-Alt-Delete + End task as above. This did the trick. Thanks for everyone's advice; I've kept a note of the other sites if I have the same problem again.Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

Masie, runing defrag & scandisk should be routine tasks in order to keep your machine in tip top condition & performing well.
Defrag is reknowned for the amount of time it takes to run, I started using Diskkeeper after hearing about it on another forum. It takes about 15 seconds / 10gb of space to run, it's well worth installing for the time factor alone.
Another little piece of software I use is called unfragger which is perfect for defragging large picture files & zip files.0 -
which advised CNT-Alt-Delete + End task as above
Another cracking piece of freeware is EndItAll 2
It saves having to CtrlAltDel and EndTask each running app and process individually one by one, instead closing/killing them all in one fell swoop.
Flexible and configurable it protects vital system tasks such as Explorer and Systray from closure, plus others as selected by the user. Works in all versions of Windoze.
