Hi All,
I graduated in IT in 2006, since then I have worked within insurance in various roles with ample IT exposure. I've now decided to move back to IT but I want to complete some courses online to illustrate I have up to date skills, courses on SQL etc. What are the recommended courses?
Thanks.

I've never been asked about specific courses, or when on the other side of the fence looked for specific courses either.
If you claim you know SQL I'd ask what flavour (Oracle, MySQL, Sybase etc.), and ask you to knock together a couple of simple queries. Then maybe a couple of the not so simple ones (find the entries in one table that aren't in another without using sub selects or temporary tables is a favourite - especially if they say they are good at SQL).
Likewise for any other skills you claim to have - Unix, Java, Perl, C/C++.
Once the interviewer knows you didn't lie on your CV about how good you are, then it's about how you think, and how you get on in a team.
Whether you're a Microsoft certified something or other, or a Cisco approved whatnot doesn't matter one bit to me.

I know you wont get a qualification from it but youtube has tons of training videos on it.
I've watch about 20 hours of photography and associated programmes Lightroom, photoshop etc....
The videos can give you some great background knowledge.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
As an Oracle DBA I might be a tad biased but Oracle skills always seem to be in demand and is by far the most used commercial database system out there, mostly hosted on Linux or *nix servers.
Oracle do accredited courses with proper training paths so it might be worth looking at doing those.
Also a better than good understanding of Linux will be a great help so you might want to install Linux at home and get learning on that.
Oracle have their own Linux distro, OEL or Oracle Enterprise Linux, a branch of Red Hat, you can download a fully working Oracle Linux VM complete with Database and tools here.

Plenty to get you started.
What is it you want to do, SQL, PLSQL developer? DBA? Systems architect? Support? Database tuning? One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
This website is quite good http://alison.com/ It provides free courses. Some of the ones I have done have been quite good, however I've not tried the subject area you are looking at. Might be worth a look to see if it helps.0

Todays Enterprise IT departments have all aspects to look at. Support, Web Dev, DBA, Helpdesk, Networks, Storage, Servers, Security, Compliance, Data management etc...
You need to choose your disipline. What 'floats your boat'? I'm personally a senior tech in infrastructure who wears many hats but wishes I'd specialised as I see my peers earning the bigger bucks as specialists.
ITIL is always welcome in any IT dept but it's boring.. Yawn. If you haven't already, I seriously suggest looking at virtulisation and storage. These are here to stay.0
