I had exactly the same wording on mine last week, got a quote of £214 - but as others have said do not leave too long, I am going to get some more quotes and get mine done asap as not worth the risk
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.
  • I had an advisory for 3 years running with steering fluid leak (but never had to top up the reservoir as looked full to me!). They got me on this year's MOT with a replaced steering rack and £495 later! I guess business was slack this year.

IF the MOT said replace such a critical component, why do you have to question it? Or bear down, when you killed someone in a car crash, or run over someone. So how can you define safety, over the advice you were given, and the solution?

Because some places rely on that thinking to sell you brakes that you don't need. It is NOT dangeroous at the moment (or it would have failed), so getting a second opinion is perfectly sensible.

I don't think anyone on here is sayting just carry on and forget it, but advising for worn disks is one of the favourite ways to drum up business. It used to be failing them for wear, but VOSA finally put a stop to that, so now they simply advise you and rely on the "Oh NOES, it's SAFETY!!!" fear to sell them anyway.

If you don't know enough to judge them yourself then you can either accept their "advice" or ask the opinion of someone else who does know what they're looking at and see if they agree.

As an example, here is a disk with wear (notice the lip at the outer edge) which an MOT tester would be perfectly entitled to advise for because it is worn. But it's nowhere near "worn out" and you'd be a fool to replace it at this stage:

Why would you be a fool to replace it at this stage? The MOT tells you to replace it immenently, the manufacturer says replace it at this stage; the only fool is the one that decides NOT to replace it; WHY NOT? It has imminent failure, the only way NOT to replace it, is stupidity, or ignorance..

You have been told it needs replacing; if you don't - you are in imminent case of killing yourself. Well done to those that die, due to disregarding safety advice.

Are you OK? You do have a tendency to over exaggerate.

The Jeep failed on excessive corrosion on rear brakes 4 years ago (bear in mind it was standing for 6-12 months). The excessive corrosion was cleaned up with a sander and the rear discs have never been changed since.

No it doesn't. Otherwise the MOT tester would not have passed them! The only person being ignorant here is you by not reading it properly.

Don't a lot of manufacturers specify a minimum thickness that the brake discs can safely wear to?

Find out what that is, measure yours, and if it's getting close to that consider replacing, otherwise ignore the tester trying to drum up business.

I've had a car advised for worn brake discs, didn't change them, took it to a different MOT place the next year and got no advisory. That MOT place got my repeat business and no advisory on them that time either. That's another two years of perfectly safe motoring.

I probably will replace them at some point this year though. They are finally nearing the end of their life.

Melodramatic non-sense. Most people are clueless when it comes to cars, some people don't even know how to open the bonnet on their car. Dodgy mechanics know this, so will do unneccessary work on cars, fail things tht shouldn't be failed and charge ripoff rates.

I am amazed at what some people will pay, for a job I know I can do for £20 in parts and with a spare hour. If the brakes were going to fail that quickly, it would have failed the MOT. There is no problem in taking the wheel off and having a look. Anyone with a bit of experience when it comes to cars will be able to see how bad they are.

    Yes there is.

The runout rate can also be measured with a DTI tool to check it's not warped or anything.
