so in the back of the drive you have 3, possibly 2 cables, one being power, the other the ribbon cable as shown, and possibly an audio cable. the audio cable, and ribbon plugs are filled into the sockets below.

    for an ide drive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIG7P7r2jGk
fir sata, similar except no audio connection, no jumper, and different connectors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Lm2lk8qALc

then enable the drive in the bios. It should auto detect this drive.

then go into windows amd look in explorer. If it is still not there, use diskmgmt.msc and assign a drive letter.

Common problems: plugs not inserted. Plugs not fully inserted, plugs inserted the wrong way round. Plugs slightly pulled out when manipulating the cable. Often one side of the cable can be higher than the other if enough force is not used, but looks ok to the untrained eye. Bent pins on plugs. Cable connected up wrongly - primary goes onto the motherboard and the master into the drive. When cables like the ones shown on the post above are used, the drive jumper is set to CS (cable select), rather than MA (master), or is left off in some cases.

    Figured it

    It is sata drive

I remember 6 months back robbing the sata lead to plug in to my new 1TB HDD - hence why there wasn't a lead in the old one and hence why it wouldn't work - so i neednt bought a new one

    anyway

my PC already has 2 x 360 gb HDD so

I can either migrate everything from one of the 360 HDD to the 1TB drive and chucking the 360 which i can imagine screwing up

or can you just split Sata cables? Ive even got a spare sata cable but nowhere to plug it into the MB

Theres only 4 sata plugs on the motherboard and they're all in use?

    I would not bother with 1T (£55), go for 2T(£78) or 3T. 4T is a bit expensive.

    you get a 3t disk for £89 http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006KCX0UE/ref=nosim/?!!!!!hotukdeals-21

you can not split sata cables, you can purchase a sata card, if you have a spare slot. you can get sata cards than can take 16 disks

I've already got 1TB drive - got it a little over a year ago i think - hence i robbed a sata connection to it

I dont need 3 HDDs so i think i'll ditch 1 and reclaim the sata connection for my 2nd DVD-RW

    cheerrs

Consider getting a SATA-USB desktop case/caddy for the 1TB drive, hook it up via USB and use as a backup drive.

The OP is considering removing one of their HDD's to free up a SATA slot for the DVD drive. I agree with the recommendation to fit one of the drives to a USB caddy as that means the DVD drive can be used and the hard drive can also be used.

OP discovered the reason his new DVD wouldn't work was because he had removed the SATA lead over 6 months ago to use with his newly acquired HDD. This is also the reason his old DVD wouldn't work!

OP now wants to remove a HDD to free up a SATA cable for DVD.
