MBNA card deactified.

I had a letter from MBNA recently stating that my credit card will be deactivated on 2nd April. This is because of information received from a number of sources including Visa, MasterCard & American Express. A new card with a new number & Pin will be sent within 7 working days. I find this most annoying as several companies will have to be informed as my details will be changed. I had an live email chat with a MBNA rep, he said that several companies had been "compromised" and the action was to prevent fraud. Any comments?

    You've probably used your card somewhere that has been hacked, so they don't want to risk it.

    Surely if it was to prevent fraud, this is a good thing? An inconvenience, yes, but I'd rather this inconvenience then to be a victim of fraud.

    It's annoying but they are exposed to losses from fraud and you do have to accept that they will want to protect themselves from those losses. While you wouldn't lose money, they would.
  • I'm just wondering why, if the card is compromised that it's not blocked immediately instead of waiting several days.

    Standard procedure when a card issuer is notified that a range of numbers may have been compromised. There might never be any fraud on the card, it's replaced as a precaution.

    There are various levels of compromise. Some rate nothing more than a marker on a card, that it is at a higher risk than normal.

    Clearly this is not a really serious one. But MBNA feel that the risk is pretty high to put such a short timeframe on the stop.

    They have timed it to create as little disruption to people by stopping after easter.
    If it was a real high risk. They would be calling people.

    Card and pin points to either a ATM or a high street shop where it has been used.
