Disabled walkin shower

Options
A few weeks a friend of mine had walkin in installed, while it was being done it was a dreadful time for him. One of the men that was installing it was dreadful and it was obvious he was doing other jobs while carry out the work on my friend bathroom. He lives on his own and I feel he was taken advantage of by one of the workmen and he does not know what to do about it.

Has anyone else experience this and what did you do about it.

    Several avenues.
Firstly - the police - if there was an actual criminal offence committed. http://www.cps.gov.uk/publications/prosecution/disability_hate_crime_leaflet.pdf

This is extremely unlikely to lead anywhere, unless 'was dreadful' amounted to physical or severe verbal abuse.

Other than that - he has no contractual relationship with the builder, if he was not the person that paid for the shower.
They would need to make a complaint, or take further action against the firm employing them.
It's possible that the place may not have been legally habitable - which would raise issues with the landlord.

What specific ways was he taken advantage of?

When I had my wetr00m/walk-in-shower put in then the workmen were also working on other projects at the same time. It made gfood sense - for example one day they laid the new floor in my bathroom and then had to leave it to set, so went to work in a different house.

When the job was done, then a foreman came round and checked the work - I then signed to say I was happy with the job. This would be an appropriate time for your friend to register any compalints.

If your friend is in a property owned by a Housing Association then there should be a representative there that he can contact.

    - you "feel he was taken advantage of by one of the workmen", but not others involved
    - how exactly was he "taken advantage of by one of the workmen"
    - which particular elements of the build were "dreadful"
    - was he the friend, going to "do something about it" prior to or as a result of, your intervention ?

Help the group understand (1) what the friend feels not what you feel, and (2) how living on is own led to a less viable installation as a result of being taken advantage of by one of the workmen ? For myself you have written nothing of consequence and I have difficulty seeing anything untoward let alone 'dreadful'

    - water - all water on and off and on again at least once
    - electric - all electric on and off and on again at least once
    - knockin', bangin' dust, disruption, noise etc for 3 days
    - bath, shower, handbasin etc unavailable for 3 days
    - strangers in out and all over the house for 3 days
    - can't sleep during the day, can't hear the TV for 3 days
    - loo unavailable unless you stop the job and remove workmen
    - constant debilitating inconvenience for 3 days

Having a wet-room built is quite a trauma for a fit healthy person, who, would moan like hell about what's happening. Taken in context what did this group or individual do to your friend ?.

In my experience, builders always have several jobs on the go at the same time. What did he actually do to your friend?

Two men tuned up to do the work but one of them left and never came back on the first day they arrived. This guy was constantly on the phone organizing other jobs and was working on them when he should have been working in my friend bathroom. He was very loud and my friend said you could not help but hear what he was saying on the phone.

Also, they got a certainly amount of time to do the work, but it still not been finished that was over 3 weeks ago. Door was left off the bathroom for 6 days, which was OK as he lives on his own, but the door was left up perched precariously next to the living room entrance and was very unsafe and almost fell on him when getting into his living room. He was without a loo for 6 days, but they supply a very small portable one for him, which was not good as he suffers from very bad knees and hip problems.

One of the guys got paid for material, but nothing was ordered, which delayed everything to no end. The first day nothing was done at all as the guy that was on the phone all the time went out and never got back so the other man had to leave and not work was done his bathroom day at all that day. They took out the hand wash basin and the toilet and bath on the second day on the job

The floor was done in 3 stages, first bit was done to one end of the bathroom and waited for that to dry and the next couple of day they did the rest of the floor and brought it up the bathroom door entrance and for that bit to dry, but when that dried it kept crumbling away apparently not enough of cement in the mix so the following day they put quick drying cement on top of it to hold it together and had to wait for that to dry.

The builder kept his cement machine store in my friend’s bathroom as well as other building equipment for days and took it away and brought it back when he came back to my friend place.

Next thing was for the guy to lay the non-slip floor on top of the concreted floor the guy that was doing it had to even out the other builders concrete as well, therefore more quick dying cement had to go on, before he could lay the non-slip lino. This was a Friday and after this guy waited for the cement to dry and laid part of the lino, he then left saying he would be back on Monday, but did not returned until Wednesday afternoon. He did a bit more and then put 2 bits wood skirting not evenly joined together along one side of the bathroom wall and then he left it like that.

Now the shower is not working, it was OK for one day and then it kept going very hot and then cold and now it just does not work at all only cold water comes out from. He is terrified of these builders back and he does not want to ever see them again especially the one that was constantly on the phone organisation other work and going away to work on other jobs and then coming back to my friend place whenever he felt like. He would say I will be back at 8am the next day but would not turn up until about 11 or 12 or maybe not at all. There are other issues as well he said he will let me know later about it as it has been a very stressful time for him and would not recommend anyone going thought this as the damage done to his health was not worth it.
  • i had a wetroom put in last year, it took 6 working days to do from start to finish. i moved out for a week while it was done. there was no dust, no mess left behind when they finished. you diidnt say if he was paying for this job or whether it was the council paying for the adaption. council contracters do pop off to fit in other council jobs as needed by the council who are the oness paying.

Same in my experience. Took 7 days to complete but the outcome has been superb, can't give them any minus points whatsoever.
