FTB advice re life & critical illness cover

Hi there
We have just sorted our mortgage for a flat and are looking at life and critical illness insurance. Me and my girlfriend are both in our mid 20s and it is our first purchase together.
We have had a quote from our building society which works out at £38pm for a joint policy and covers 40 broad illnesses.
My girlfriend has found online (possibly even on MSE) some quotes from places like justclickforcover and Aviva which work out at around a tenner each for combined life cover, critical illness and possibly income protection.
This is not an area I know much about having never had to do it before. What should I be looking out for in the small print with these quotes as I obviously am conscious that the cheap ones may not provide the right amount of cover. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice that may help?
Thanks very much

Banks building societies are more expensive than through a mortgage/financial advisor or online.
If you dont know what your looking for then i would speak to an advisor, even if its through a bank/building society as the last thing you want is the wrong cover or for it to not pay out.
But guaranteed premiums will ensure there are no increases after 5 years or as you get older. Reviewable premiums generally start lower but then become more expensive.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. That is pretty unlikely. Is she sure she has quoted critical illness cover and not terminal illness cover. Your age would see low cost but life, CI and income protection for a tenner seems unlikely.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
