There are applications that I don't want to specifically disable or remove, but rather not to run on Start-Up (or indeed run in the background).
How do I remove these from the Start-Up list?
I'm on Windows 8.

To disable Startup items in Windows 8:
1. Open Windows Explorer.
NOTE: You could do so by pressing the Windows + E keys.
2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the hidden system folder below:
NOTE: You could also press Windows+R to open Run, type shell:Common Startup, and click/tap on OK.C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
3. You can now either add or delete shortcuts for what items you like in the Startup folder. When finished you can close the start up folder.
If you do not know how to show hidden folders, theres a simple quick tutorial located here.Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.0 -
I found Win didn't show ALL the things that start-up running in the background.
Free tool: CCleaner

Or TuneUp Utilities (£30 3PC) can also disable startups but also disable other installed software which also speeds up your PC. Its quite effective.

You can find a trialpay link to get this for free or download their 30-day free trial, join their newsletter and you usually get a discount code to get the full version. New editions come out Oct of each year, I always get a 50% discount code and have been doing that for a number of years now.0 -

OPTION FOUR
To Enable, Disable, or Delete Startup Items in CCleaner
1. If you have not already, download and install the latest version of the free CCleaner program.
2. Run CCleaner, click/tap on the Tools icon on the left, then click/tap on the Startup tab. (see screenshot below)
3. From here, you can select a startup item, then either enable, disable, or delete it. (see screenshot below)0 -

Thanks all for the suggestions. Hopefully I have achieved what I needed to with CCleaner.
Paddy H - the folder you directed me to is empty, even after I changed the view to show hidden items!!! Should I be worried by this?!?0 -
Click the Start button, type in msconfig, press Enter.
The Startup tab and the Services tab show what starts on startup. Careful which services you uncheck though.0
