Furious with Halifax Bank

Options
Went to put money in at 1pm to clear a cheque for road tax. Saw customer services about pin request and she asked if i needed anything else. I said i just need to queue and put money in now, she says i can do that. She takes money gives me a receipt written and signed,,,off i go. Look online and cheque has been returned.

Just been in branch and they cannot get cheque back to pay it, and will charge me a returned cheque fee even though i put money in plenty of time...their cashier didnt

What to do?

If I understand correctly, you wrote/issued a cheque without having sufficient cleared funds available to meet the value? If that's the case you've breached your T&Cs. Not a good place from which to start a complaint. If, however, you wrote a cheque, then spent further, then you may be OK.

You then, at some point later, tried to pay cash into the account to cover the cheque?

Dates and times would help determine if it was your fault (with reference to the T&Cs of your account), or the fault of the bank and/or their staff. Unless we know who was, or is likely to be, at fault we can't advise a course of action.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, you're correct. There was eough money in when i wrote it, but today a variable bill came out more than i thought. I check everyday, so i saw this and took money straight in to cover it. Was told all would be ok aslong as you credit account before close of business. As i said money given to cashier at 1pm, she gave me receipt. Money not credited to bank until past 4pm, but at 3.30pm cheque was returned
