Any opinions on the performance of these?

Read an article in the paper today at work can't remember which paper might have been the times. It said Vodafone shares could be worth having at the moment!

    Unilever seem like steady climbers

And if you read this hello redbuzzard :D

If you're reading about share tips in the papers then it's usually too late, you've missed the boat.

Bought Vod at 156p when a lot of people had big doubts about it; going to hold long term unless price goes ridiculous, (230p +).

TBH, following other people's tips is the road to the poorhouse, IMHO.

Do your own research and have the courage of your convictions.

    Good luck. :)

I am guessing BP will have suffered because of the Gulf of Mexico leak? A few weeks back I heard on the Radio 4 Today programme a report on how the USA are seeking Billions of $$s over BPs estimates for the clean up and compensation packages.

It appears another share to watch according to a work colleague is Serco and if you are into investing in health care Smith and Nephew.

I was watching the Unilever shares on H&L and they list recent purchases and sales and someone or something sold 1017489 Unilever shares and the value was £28,326,893.76

I nearly spilled my tea when I saw it.

Yup. The shares dropped a bit when the well caught fire. Then it just kept going, from bad to worse and even worse.

You can imagine how I felt when the horsemeat turned up in the burgers.

Do you know if the Horse scandal affected Tesco share value? Go Ahead group seem to be steady. It seems the steady ones are simple services like soap powder, medicines and transport. Things Joe and Josephene public need each day.

Considering the Coalition are looking to contractorise more and more to companies like Serco I would have though they might be a good punt.

I think there was a blip.

Once again - you might be spot on, but unless the 'the market' has failed to spot what you have, the benefit of that is already in the price.

The last IFA I used (20 years ago) told me I shouldn't use trackers because that meant holding all the bad shares along with the good ones, whereas a fund manager would only buy the good ones so should do better! As we know, fund managers do worse at least as often as they do better,at least in terms of long term returns. The reason, crudely, is that 'good' shares are priced as good, and 'bad' shares as bad, relatively of course because the whole market moves up and down with weight of money.

If you think trying to beat the market is a good plan, I urge you to do some reading.

On a side note here regarding shares. Stamp Duty: am I correct that it does not apply if the purchase value is £1,000 or less?
You are correct that Stamp Duty is not payable for paper transactions below £1,000.

But for electronic transactions, Stamp Duty Reserve Tax (SDRT) is payable, whatever the size of the transaction.

They were / are selling their best asset -Verizion.

Verizion is the only reason Vodaphone can afford its dividend payout.

Strip out Verizion and the remaining business has passed its peak.

    Do your own research

How can an ordinary guy do his own research on Vodaphone?

Thats what I thought too, and may yet be proved right.
(although it could be argued Vodaphone couldn't afford its dividend payout as it booked a huge loss)
The market seems obsessed with the next dividend and doesn't appear to appreciate whats going to happen when they have sold their best earner.
Rather like BP selling TNKBP. What they appear to have got in return is a minority holding with the Russian Government - whose motivation may not be making a profit?
