Gas fire on outside wall.

All of my chimney breast have been knocked out, so no chimneys. Hardboard over the old breasts
IS it 'ok' to mount gas fires on outside walls (one front, one back), ie merely knock a hole in the wall for the flue ?

I currently have a small 'room heater' sited on an outside wall, but it is feeble and takes a long time ot heat up.

Can do this myself?. SHOULD it be done by a gas contractor ? Who would know when it was put in, ie pre any new regs.

ONLY Registered Gas Installers with the correct training module can work on or install gas appliances, in legal terms!

(yeh I know all about the competance arguement, but?)

To be installed on an outside wall it would have to be fit for purpose, ie a balanced flued appliance, and not a standard fire that can be fitted to a fireplace!

Can you give us a link to the old regs when gas fitting was a diy activity?

I am a bit confused . You say you knocked out the chimney breasts, but then say you have hardboard over the old breasts. What is it?

If you still have the old chimney breats downstairs, but knocked them out upstairs, then you are correct, you don't have a flue and will need balanced flue fires.

If you do have the chimney breasts still in situ and want to put fires in their sitings, then you may have a problem. Most balanced flue fires have a flue kit which goes to 600 mm max. You cannot add on and extend these flues ( you used to be able to, but the fires have now been tested to 600 mm max. This length, won't get you through the chimney breast and outside wall, they will be too short.

The other factor to take into account, is that you say the wall heaters you have don't give much heat out. You will be pushing it to get any BF fire , which will give you over 3.5kw. The wall heaters will be around 2.5kw output.

YOU CANNOT fit them yourselves, it would be idiotic to even try and you could invalidate your home insurance, you won't have building control cover for the installation and you will lose any warranty you have with the appliances.

Get in touch with either your local fireplace showroom, or an RGI who is accredited to work on gas fires, some aren't.
