..update - as 'I' have both personal & business account with NWest, I moaned to my 'relationship manager'....stating that 'no reason' for refusal is not good enough. He's looking into it as a complaint for my son - watch this space....(not holding breath).
Would like son to be with NW if poss, so transfers are quick/easy.
He's not currently applying for a credit card, for fear of a rejection!0 -
the best possible advice you could give would be to leave natwest he is 19 and as other have said there is no reason he cannot have a full adult account, nationwide have been ever so good with my 17yr old he has all card facilities except an over draught0

I know students that got accounts with First Direct (at the time of min £1,500 income each month) because their parents had accounts and complained, so you may 'have luck' with this, although I have no possible explanation for why they would refuse an account like that.
My Natwest account was fantastic (student railcard), but if they won't help you then don't have any doubts about opening an account elsewhere. I seem to alternate with excellent service and nonsense with Natwest, but that's just my experience.
Also, with faster payments, transfers between the big high street banks (HSBC, Barclays, RBS Group, Santander etc) are pretty much instant, so him having an account with Natwest won't make transfers between your accounts any quicker necessarily.0 -

My daughters had no problem getting ordinary bank accounts with LloydsTSB.
11-15 - debit card to get money out of ATMs
16-18 - full debit card, pay in shops. Can set up standing orders and direct debits. Take out mobile phone account.
Obviously at 11 they weren't on the electoral roll, it just needed a parent to go in when they opened their accounts. The accounts were upgraded automatically when they reached 16.
At 18 my elder was automatically offered a credit card. No credit history necessary. No parental guarantee required. She didn't want the card anyway. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
....Relationship manager lodged complaint in my name instead of sons (not joint on account) so that held things up.
Spoke to a lovely lady in the cust serv dept who 're-did' the complaint in sons name and apologised that 'wheels must turn' and it could take up to a week.
5 mins later (honestly) she phoned back "all sorted". She'd spoken to a colleague and they'd both looked at sons online application (no trace of the one done 'in branch') and agreed, no reason for it not to be successful. So, she tried entering it (same as son had done) and it went through, with immediate effect. Don't think we'll ever know why it didn't work first and second time - but third time lucky!
Thanks for all the comments/suggestions previously.0
