Get a Mondeo then. I bought a 2004 diesel in 2009 for just over £2000.

Wow. Are you sure you didn't take that shot after coasting five miles down a hill in sixth gear?
The best I have had from mine (Mk 3, 56 plate, 2 litre 130PS diesel) is 50.3 on the display, which was 53 in reality checked on fuel used over mileage. That was a long motorway trip keeping to 60 and with a light right foot. Local use, I get either side of 42 mpg. I still think that's pretty good for a heavy, comfy load-lugger.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
i wouldnt considder a pug 206 sw to be visually pleasing but thats me, somepeople would call them a work of art i would call it hiddious and an eyesore, its a marmite affair love or hate it.
deisel pumps are a common failure, aswell as ignition parts.
they go through rear bushes and axels like a chain smoker with a pack of 10 ciggies, airbag light a common dash feature, ABS sensors fail quite often on the 206 and 307 and the keyfobs have a single screw that work loose over time if held on a key chain that will allow the blade key to drop out and go walkies (many people who own one will add a touch of glue to the threads when replacing the battery), watch for uneven wear over the rear tyres this can indicate a rear bush or axel failure, quick blip the throttle with someone stood at rear and look for blue smoke not nice having to replace a turbo at nearly £300-1200 a go.
the pug diesel HDI likes to be run till it warms up, if doing short trips youll notice it wont be happy and get noisy.
EGR valves clog up.
my ex works had a fleet of HDI pug partners, ranging form 1.6 to 2.0 some turbo some non turbo, all of them has ripped through diesel pumps at least twice, some has had new turbos, some have had new injector rails and mostly EGR failures throught the year ex works keeps a box of them for fleet repairs to limit downtime.
only 1 has never required anything and its an old pug partner mk1 serviced when its needs it, its battered, its bruised, but with nearly 500k on the clock its still drives and doesnt show signs of needing anything engine wise, although this month it needs a new complete suspension setup (it on original factory springs still) and failed MOT on that only.0 -

Excellent condition for its age, and well-maintained by previous owners and by me, but I wouldn't value it at anywhere near 3k now. I paid 1.3k for it, and I'd say that with me doubling the use over three years I'd not ask for more than £800 maximum if I sold it on. Still, maybe it would be worth more. Personally I think even with low mileage, over more than a decade there'll be wear and tear that puts the car at risk.0

A make and model is always good when putting your opinion forward.0
