RAC refused to tow my car

When you 1st broke down they'd of recovered you to anywhere in the UK, be that home, your destination or your repair garage of choice.
However as soon as you've had the fault diagnosed it becomes an ongoing problem and nothing to do with them.
as per their t&cs
"what is not covered
A second recovery if the original fault has not been properly repaired by a third party or if we have advised you that it is a temporary repair.
– The use of the recovery service as a way to avoid repair costs.
– Recovery must be arranged at the time of breakdown and cannot be requested later."0 -
I really can't believe some people...
READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS!
They are their to help stranded motorists, oh hell I am not even bothering with this...0 -
Thanks, now I get the point!
So, I think even if I waited for RAC to arrive, my case wouldn't have been any different.
I would have asked them (or they would themselve) to take the nearest garage (which is the main dealer nearby to that place - as I was not aware that I'd need a new engine) and once reached there, my situation wouldn't have changed!
This also hightlights a potential dillema in future.
Suppose there is a fault in car of such a nature (like dashboard warning light) which only a main dealer can diagnose (not any local mechanic) or I'm not aware of what type of failure
= Either I can ask RAC to take tow to my home always
or
= can ask them to tow to main dealer nearby
Now, as of my case, if the cost of fixing is prohibitive in mail dealer place, I'm at a loss!
If I take the car to my home (or a garage near my home), if they can't fix it (or diagnose it) then I've to tow the car to dealer at my cost. Also, at out of hours, main dealer may not even open at all.
And if RAC drops me to main dealer and I'm not happy with cost of repair (main dealers are usually very high) I again have to tow at my cost!
So, any way I'll probably end up towing cost from my pocket!!!
Lession learnt,
If broken down on road, always wait for Recovery (AA/RAC etc.) to arrive and then ask to tow back own home! Once in home, you'd have enough peace of mind what to do next!Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
You could also move to Autoaid which is far cheaper in the first instance not sure if they would cover you in the circumstances you describe but someone on the thread below got two tows

Your missing the point, if you'd have waited the RAC driver would of told you what was wrong with the car, then given you the choice, if your engine needed replacing then the technician would of told you this and maybe given you a rough guide figure.
At this point he would of offered to take your car to a garage or your home. Or if you are covered, your car to the garage and then you to your home.0 -
When the cam belt went on my car the RAC very kindly towed me home rather than to a garage so we could get and idea of price before commiting to having the work done.
The driver also gave me a card and told me that with our membership we could call and then they would take the car to the chosen garage for us.0
