CC/Paypal Question

If I make a payment to someone with my cc via paypal (not ebay) would it be classed as a cash withdrawal? Somebody on another thread said that when they made a deposit to a bingo site with their cc (direct, not through pp) that this happened so it got me wondering.

I've got a santander zero card.

TIA :)

The unhelpful answer is it depends on how Santander treat Paypal merchant category codes (MCC).

The bingo example you mention. I would say that the bingo company the person transacted with came under a gambling MCC of 7995. Many card issuers now treat gambling as cash and any company that has that MCC will have it's transaction treated that way.

I couldn't get a definitive answer from googling on what PPs MCC is

It depends on who you are paying, Paypal will present a different code to your card issuer depending on the classification of the goods being bought.

Make a payment to an individual is unlikely to attract cash advance charges, but you will likely be charged 3.5% + 20p.

I think Barclays treat all gaming as cash advance but person to person is a bit of a grey area. Santander have not made a move on this yet. I think it is just a matter of time until credit card companies start to clamp down on PayPal and treat anything that is not directly a good or service as a cash advance.

To be honest given that Paypal simply move money it should be classed as a cash transaction when via a credit card.

There is a very good card called santander zero which does not make any charges for cash advances.

I used to use the payapl top up card to get cash with no fees from my credit card. Unfortunately, credit card companies started wising up and clamped down on what they consider a cash payment.

Think it depends on the card.
