Tax credits and sickness

  • its not the amount of hrs you work that dictates whether you get ssp its how much you earn , but at least we agree on the last statement , you get sod all!! you either dont get sick or disabled as when you do theres no one there to help you. yet if theres nothing wrong with you and you dont work you get everything. i know so many people that just sit on their backsides and let the gov pay for everything makes me mad!! i dont know how they can live with themselves it drives me mad not doing something to pay my way.

i get £74 wtc and i have informed the tax credits they said i will still get my tax credits up till 28/8/ i went sick from 13/3/. My point is now im not getting any wages do i just live on the tax credits? i cant understand why wtc are there to bump up your low wages but when your wages stop because of sickness theres nothing there to bring your income back up to what it was or just under when you were working and getting wtc.

The advice you have been given is incorrect. If you are not working, WTC will only continue for the first 28 weeks if you meet certain conditions. You must either be getting a disability benefit (SSP, ESA) or be getting national insurance credits due to limited capability for work.

Are you sure that you meet one of them? http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/keep-up-to-date/changes-affect/work-changes/no-work-illness.htm

I would suggest you go to to CAB and get this checked.

Have you told the tax credits that you aren't getting any SSP or ESA? That is crucial as based on the information in that link I posted above as well as the Working Tax Credits guide (WTC2) your tax credits should cease now rather than in August.

The WTC2 can be downloaded from the HMRC website

    www.hmrc.gov.uk/leaflets/wtc2.pdf

See page 11 of the WTC2. If you aren't getting SSP, any of the benefits listed or NI credits then the provision allowing you to be classed as still being in work to continue claiming WTC would not apply.
