Winter Tyres

We live in a rural hilly area and have been considering winter tyres, as when it snows it is very difficult to get around. Between me and the mrs we have a Citroen C2 and Vauxhall Meriva. Been looking on ebay for some. I am thinking the best way to do it would be to get 2 sets of cheap steel rims and some part worn winter tyres from ebay.

Or shall I stick with what we have got now and put up with a bit of disruption......decisions decisions, problem is having to store 8 wheels/tyres somewhere.....

was looking at getting 4x4 but the daft running costs for the amount it snows every year doesn't add upp.

I make do with all season tyres and take my time in the snow. You have answered your own questions, somewhere to store the extra wheels and does not snow too much.
Google gives you answers use it.........

Not all 4x4's have daft running costs. Find an old original foat panda 1L engine, Old suzuki 1300cc engine.

I dont have winter tyres and not been stuck yet.

Well you don't have to store 8 wheels - maybe 4 or 5, or perhaps only 3, if you carry one of the winters around as a spare

Ebay may turn up some wheels for you as well. Some people seem to never use their spare, then sell it off after the car has gone.

If one or two of those come with decent tyres put them on the car when you have a worn pair, then the winters can go on the wheels that came off.

I don't recommend buying part used - winter tyres are designed to be changed at 3 or 4mm.

I got tyres ready mounted on steel rims from mytyres. use them nov-march (or April this year!)

All seasons are a good compromise if you can't store extra tyres but live somewhere where you need a wee bit of snow performance every now and again.

I used Hankook Optima 4s a few years back and they were very good, and can't be that far off a good winter tyre. Wore very well too.

The Hankook all season tyres that flyingscotno1 used performed very well in AutoExpress tests.

I have a son in Austria. Legal requirement there is winter tyres through winter months. We needed three new tyres on our Merc Vito so bought winter tyres and have had two trips out to him this winter. At the moment, in French Alps and at all times really appreciate the safety and grip .... truly amazing. Wet road grip is also enhanced.

I don't think we will change back to summer tyres as we are getting about 4mpg MORE and no noticeable extra noise, reduction in comfort etc.

So my advice - go for a set of winter tyres (no real price difference) and see how they work for a year.

Not a good idea. Once the weather and temperatures improve winter tyres will wear significantly quicker than standard summer tyres and performance will also suffer.
