politics is ridiculous. no need for the system we have. we should just have an elected pm, chancellor etc and people vote directly for them. business leaders should hold these roles. the MD of a FTSE 100 (or equivalent) company should be PM. The FD of a FTSE 100 should be chancellor etc etc etc. Not no marks like filthy smooth face and osbourne.

How are you coping without your benefits? Still managing to fund your children's ISAs despite the hardship?

Peter Oborne of the Telegraph puts it well:

No he didn't; he put together an extremely weak attempt at a hatchet job and just emphasised the problems journalism in the UK often causes.

David Miliband would have been on the opposition benches if it wasn't for the presses determination to create a narrative about a power struggle. He tried sitting on the backbenches and instead gets accused of sulking instead. Regardless of my views on the Labour party and even Ed and Dave I find it appalling that the media's need to stir up controversy is hampering our politics.

We're seeing a very similar thing with Dave C, Boris and various other senior conservatives. Yes there will always be some scheming, but it is clear that whether Boris has any intention of challenging Dave C or not the papers will continue to write about it as though him doing so is inevitable.

The Telegraph article makes an exceptionally important point about his constituents. So David Milliband was off making a small fortune on the international lecture circuit, as well as £70,000 for 3.5 days' consultancy with a Californian eco-technology company.

Why constituents put up with this lack of representation, I just don't know (well, I do, it's that they feel they cannot vote for other parties).

But when Nadine Dorries went off for a few weeks, there was huge publicity. When Brown, Milliband, Darling and the others do, there's not a whisper.

Nadine was knived in the back by the Conservatives
David wasn't knived in the back by Labour

There is a bit of double standards going on there.

However, there is something a bit foul about politicians using their political career as a platform for future earnings. David Milliband, Tony Blair are the worst examples.

This is all that is wrong with politics today - folks should have real world experience first and then a political career later using that real world experience.

Clearly, on those days they are not available for MP work, they are not earning their salary/pension/allowances.

This goes for any of them : Labour/Tory etc.

When the going gets tough it's revealing how many choose to show their true colours.

I'd like to know what qualifications David Milliband has in the area of international charity work. Is he a just a figurehead, who can work his old contacts ?

You'd end up with a House full of the idle rich and career politicians. I can't think of a worse idea!

I think we already have that, in truth.

The only major event which really excited them was the expenses scandal.

Passionate types like Dennis Skinner or Frank Fields are a marginalised minority.

We end up with dross like Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper.
