Hi,
I wasn't sure if this was the right place to post or not but I have recently been tracking our meter readings daily and have discovered we use 10 units of gas a day most days.
We have a detached Victorian house so no opportunity for cavity wall insulation but have double glazing etc and the boiler is only about 3 years old. The heating generally sits at 16 degrees and the house is pretty cold- I wear often 4 layers of tops in the house and a pair of socks, pair of thick socks and slippers etc, fleecey blankets on the sofa at night etc. I have 3 small children so couldn't really have it any colder (and it probably is colder than 16 degress upstairs, the thermostat is kept in the living room).
10 units just seems a lot, I am hoping when we get to warmer weather it will really bottom out or we are in for horrific bills/DD increases.
Does anyone else know how many gas units they use a day roughly? Is this a ridiculous high number?

I've moved your thread over to the Gas and Electricity board where you should get more advice.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -
What units?
Therms or metric units?0 -
It depends if your gas meter is Imperial or Metric.
Older meters are Imperial and a gas unit is 100 cubic feet and equal to approx 33kWh
A gas unit on a Metric meter is 1 cubic metre and approx 11kWh
So 10 units is either 330kWh costing around £13 or 110 kWh costing £4.50.
Certainly 110kWh a day in this weather is not high for the house you describe and being at home all day.0 -
I am not sure but guessing metric as the meter was replaced in 2011?Jan 2013-£140,231.65

Metric will have M3(small '3') on the meter and installed in 2011 would mean metric.
So to repeat, 110kWh a day is not high.0 -
Yes it does say M3 I think. Thank you for that, I had a moment of panic thinking that we were going to be a fortune every day as I had read about the conversion of imperial units somewhere but didn't realise it was different from metric.
Phew, panic averted:)Jan 2013-£140,231.65

There are modern methods available today to insulate walls even if they have no cavity0 -

Could you point me in the direction of more information on that please? We really struggle with condensation/mould build up on the outside walls in our rooms in winter as they feel so cold and it drives me crazy.Jan 2013-£140,231.65
