Crete in October?

Hi all,

I've been to Crete a couple of times before, but it was over 20 years ago and usually in May/June.

Thinking of taking my 12-year old daughter when her October school holidays start this year (so 19th October, for one week). I've seen various packages including baggage, transfers, flights and apartments for that time of year for around £270 per person, which I don't think is too bad.

I'm thinking Stalis or Gouves for resort, somewhere with a decent beach, some shops and restaurants, and these seem to fit the bill (I have stayed in Stalis before and really liked it).

Spinalonga, Ag Nik and the Happy Train would be on the cards for excursions, does anyone have any other recommendations or advice for that time of year?

We did the October half-term in Crete several years ago and although we enjoyed it (2 adults) there was definitely an end of season air about it which did affect what was available.

thanks travelgran - was the weather okay? I don't need it hot, but sunny mostly would be nice. We're not into lying by the pool/beach all day, although we might want to do that a couple of times. Its my daughter's first sunshine holiday in years, so I'm looking for a resort with a nice beach, and stuff to do during the day.

I went to Crete in October a few years ago, and although I loved the place, we got an awful lot of rain. Days worth, in fact and I ruined a couple of pairs of shoes because the streets were so flooded. I wouldn't risk going in October again. Places were closing down as well, but this happens in a lot of tourist resorts, not just in Crete.

Would just echo what everyone has said really. We went to Zante in October half term, 2 or 3 years ago. We were really lucky with the weather, it was warm and sunny but the the last night we had quite a bit of rain and it was very windy. Bars and restaurants were closing down nearly every day. I probably wouldn't risk going again at that time of year.

Went to Crete in late-ish October some years ago and the weather was awful- they said it was as bad as January. Lots & lots of rain, and on marble floors so not the safest places to walk. Too cold to swim in the pools.
